La Liste Verte des Aires Protégées France, 2015-2018 The French Connection: Inspiring conservation GLPA The Success of Protected Areas in France French conservation efforts have inspired and mobilized effort and resources across the region, and globally. Inspired PA commitments worldwide, including Indian Ocean, Caribbean, Pacific, West Africa. Unique focus on diverse governance of PAs, including customary and community-driven focus of conservation areas for the benefit of people and the ecosystem services that sustain communities. IUCN GLPA: Achieving Quality GLPA 5 Key Lessons and responses: GLPA Pilot Phase 1. Web-based Integrated Management System is essential - Develop State of Art custom system, in 2015 2. The nomination documentation is too dense, complex - Streamline and split self-assessment from expert evaluation 3. There is a lack of stakeholder ID and engagement - Introduce Stakeholders into process, site visits 4. There is no ‘plateau’ between Registration and full GLPA - Introduce registration – candidacy – Green List stages 5. The expert’s time is too valuable to waste The IUCN Green List: Recognizing success GLPA The IUCN Green List The IUCN Green List of Protected Areas is a Global Standard for protected areas. It recognizes conserved areas that commit to equitable governance, effective management and can demonstrate conservation impact. Any protected area worldwide can commit to the IUCN Green List Standard in order to measure and improve their performance against global criteria The IUCN Green List: New global standard GLPA Global policy context The IUCN Green List is recognized as a commitment, progress marker and a reportable measure against Target 11 and the Strategic Plan 2011-2020. The IUCN Green List will help inform follow-on CBD policies and targets post-2020, to ensure that improving the quality elements of protected areas remains a priority.
