Bridge to Employment in Human Resources Program
Interested in Working With
An Up and Coming
Considering the possibility of providing an unpaid
employment placement for our student(s) with
your organization? Fanshawe College’s Bridge to
Employment in Human Resources Program
offers internationally trained individuals initially
courses in occupational specific language (OSLT),
Canadian cultural awareness and sensitivity,
employment law, and industry specific technology
skills. Next, successful program participants will
complete the Fanshawe College graduate
certificate in Human Resources Management,
including the nine credits towards the Certified
Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.
Your participation will afford the students
Canadian employment experience and
opportunity to network with you as HR
professional in the industry. This letter outlines the
particular aspects of the unpaid employment
placement, which is an integral part of the bridge
to employment in the Human Resources Graduate
Program.
Students are required to participate in an unpaid
work placement for 11 weeks, spanning January to
April - Monday to Friday inclusively. The students
will be working, to complete a minimum of 330
hours of hands on experience in the field of Human
Resources.
The goal of the employment placement, from the
college’s perspective, is to have students
participate alongside their business mentors to see
HR professionals at work and model after them
through observation, demonstration and guided
hands on experience. This experiential
professionally led experience has proven to be
invaluable to our past graduates in the Business
Human Resources Program.
HR professional?
The students will have reflected on what they hope
to achieve from their placements and what they
feel they can offer. The students are expected to
meet with their mentor, the week before the start
of the placement to complete a ‘Schedule of 10 HR
Learning Objectives’ for mutually agreed upon HR
skill / knowledge experiences throughout the 11
weeks.
Once the placement starts this Schedule of
Objectives is to be used as a pseudo college course
learning objectives sheet. The schedule will serve
as the agreement between the organization,
student and college, of what the mentorship
experience will entail and outline what 11-week
experience.
Individuals working with students are encouraged
to give regular feedback to the student throughout
the placement, particularly during the “Midpoint
Meeting” and “Exiting Interview “ which will
convey how the student performed at the
placement. This information will also be filled in
on the “HR Professional’s Evaluation of the
Student” forms which will contribute to the
students overall course outcome. In the event that
there are any questions/clarifications regarding the
placement, the mentor is encouraged to contact
the Course Instructor at any time during the
placement.
Fanshawe College students who participate in an
unpaid employment placement are covered by the
Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. This
compensation coverage is be provided by the
Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and
Universities. The Work/Education Placement
Agreement form must be completed prior to start
of placement.
