Names Lizzy Kowalczyk, Mikayla Weigel, & Cam Collins Drawing Conclusions: Islamic fundamentalism Use (1) your research notes, and (2) your class lecture notes to answer the questions below. You may print this out and answer it together or save a copy with your typed answers and attach it to your wiki page. 1. What is "Islamic fundamentalism" ("Islamism”)? Draft a definition based on your research. See the first page from the Islamic fundamentalism reading. Islamic Fundamentalism: spread of the culture and it does not agree with terrorism. They also reject Western Ideas, except of technology. 2. In 1929, British historian Arnold Toynbee wrote, "If you looked in the right places, you could doubtless find some old fashioned Islamic Fundamentalists still lingering on. You would also find that their influence was negligible." Why do you think that was true then and no longer true today? Think of some things that have happened since 1929. Old fashioned Islamic Fundamentalists linger on through their culture, for example how the women dress. Over all Islamic Fundamentalists were never violent but some branched off and became violent. So some may say that their influence was negligible because some branched off and moved on to terrorism. 3. What do you think accounts for the rise of Islamist terrorist groups? Develop a detailed “Top Five” list followed by explanations. 1. Western Ideas being pushed on Israel: The western culture was being pushed on them and they didn’t want their influence. They went back to their old ways. The younger generation became open to it and the older generation didn’t like this so they went back to their old ways and rejected western influence. 2. Spread of Democracy: The leaders didn’t want the spread of democracy. They didn’t want to change their ways. 3. Uprisings: many stood up for what they believed in and stood up for their culture through terrorism. 4. 5.
