PRESS RELEASE
SEGi SIGNS MALAYSIAN CORPORATE INTEGRITY PLEDGE
Petaling Jaya, June 24, 2011 – SEG International Bhd (SEGi) signalled its continued
commitment to a high level of accountability and transparency by being the latest
signatory to the Malaysian Corporate Integrity Pledge.
The signing of the pledge reflects SEGi’s recognition of the Anti-Corruption
Principles for Corporations in Malaysia and is committed to promote integrity,
transparency and good governance in all aspects of its operations.
“We believe that the best interests of the company and long-term value to
shareholders will ultimately be preserved by conducting our business free from
corruption and in accordance with the highest principles of integrity,” said Lee Kok
Cheng, CEO of SEGi.
The voluntary initiative spells out the commitment by SEGi to uphold the AntiCorruption Principles for Corporations in Malaysia.
Developed by Bursa Malaysia Bhd, Companies Commission of Malaysia, Malaysian
Institute of Integrity, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), NKRA
Corruption Monitoring and Coordination Division, Securities Commission Malaysia,
Transparency International Malaysia and Pemandu, the said pledge and principles
are in line with the objectives of the National Key Result Area (NKRA) of Fighting
Corruption within the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).
SEGi recognises and is willing to play its part in complying with laws, policies and
procedures related to fighting corruption, in a more transparent, accountable
governmental operating structure against a backdrop of strong governance. This is
particularly important since SEGi has been appointed to champion Entry Point
Project 2 (EPP2) under the Education National Key Economic Area (NKEA) to lead
the improvement of early child care and education training in Malaysia.
The effect of signing the unilateral pledge is that SEGi has made a clear and stand of
how it operates, which is locked down in writing and this will act as a guidance to the
company in its business conduct and interactions, particularly when faced with the
possibility of condoning payment that may tantamount to corruption.
It also demonstrates SEGi’s commitment to its stakeholders that its business
operations do not include any hidden risks or costs that are associated with corrupt
activities.
SEGi also has plans to initiate and introduce its corporate whistleblower policy. The
whistleblower policy will define the individuals covered by the policy, including
vendors, students and customers, as well as non-retaliation and confidentiality
provisions. Clear processes and an effective communication programme for all
employees and stakeholders will be drawn-up and implemented.
“The signing of the Integrity Pledge and implementation of Whistleblower policy at
SEGi is not just a bare commitment. SEGi is serious in walking the talk in the long
term by gradually moving towards self-assessment, identifying gaps and action plans
to close them and eventually self-reporting on anti-corruption measures in line with
the UN Reporting Guidance on the 10th Principle under the Global Company,” added
Lee.
By signing the Integrity Pledge, SEGi is now on its way to be listed in the register of
signatories that is carried on the website of the Malaysian Integrity Institute, and can
be accessed through the website of Bursa Malaysia Berhad.
