 Thomas Jefferson (then 3rd President of the United States) decided to double
the size of the United States by buying a large piece of land in America known
as the Louisiana from the French
 Louisiana Purchase = President Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana
Territory from the French for $15 million dollars
 The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States
 Louisiana Territory became part of the United States
 Show students a picture of the Louisiana Purchase
 As more and more Americans moved west through the Cumberland Gap and
the Wilderness Road, more people desired to move into the new western
parts of the United States
 Thomas Jefferson sent two men Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to
explore the Louisiana Territory
 Have students read p. 288 in text books about Lewis and Clarks exploration
of the Louisiana Territory
 Lewis and Clark gathered invaluable information about people, plants,
animals, and the geography of the west
