Landau, Elizabeth. "Did WHO Overstate H1N1 Threat? – Paging Dr. Gupta - CNN.com Blogs."
Paging Dr. Gupta - - CNN.com Blogs. Web. 09 June 2010.
“Last week the British Medical Journal published an article accusing the World Health
Organization (WHO) of conflicts of interest with regard to H1N1. The authors accused the organization of exaggerating the severity of the virus, and of taking advice from experts with ties to vaccine- and antiviral-producing pharmaceutical companies.”
This article talks about the H1N1 flu that spread around the world. It really did cause a lot of trouble, and people thought that the flu was a very dangerous threat, when it really wasn’t as big as they thought. The article explains how WHO, the World Health Organization, overstated the whole H1N1 pandemic. What they were accusing WHO for was that they had lowered the bar for saying when an outbreak had become a worldwide pandemic. In reality the H1N1 disease was nowhere near the bird flu that everyone was comparing it to. H1N1 was really not a big deal.
If you look at the figures, there were 57 million cases in the U.S and of those people, 11,690 died. From that data they figured out that the mortality rate was 0.12%. Now when we compare that to the seasonal flu, there are on average 30 million cases and about 36,000 deaths, thus the mortality rate was 0.12% and higher than the H1N1 pandemic.
The concept I am relating the article to, is Global Awareness. It is because the international community was facing an issue that was caused by WHO overstating the effects of the H1N1 flu. The flu quickly spread throughout the world, and people all around the globe quickly found out about it. With the world getting even more crowded, there was no way to prevent it from spreading really quickly. On April 24, 660 children at St. Francis Preparatory
were infected with swine flu and within days 1,000 people were infected. That news then got out to New York’s Public Health Agency, and they began to tell everyone that they should take precautions. Those precautions then went from city to city, country to country and then continent to continent, until it finally reached here and our school put up the hand sanitizers and gave vaccines and made sure that we were safe.
