Cortez High School AP Physics 1
Summer Assignment
Welcome to AP Physics 1, a college-level course where you will use knowledge from many
previous courses in science, math, and other subjects to find patterns, design experiments,
collect and analyze data, solve problems, and predict outcomes. Most colleges will grant
credit for a semester-long physics course (including lab) if you are a student of life sciences,
pre-medicine, or certain other fields (e.g. non-physical science major) when you achieve a
score of 4 or 5 on the AP Physics 1 Exam. Review the policies of the college you are
interested in to determine their AP exam requirements. Because this is college-level physics,
the course requires you have a strong set of math skills, especially in algebra and
trigonometry. In this packet you will find some background information to read and problems
to review and complete before we begin our formal study in August. To be most successful,
complete these steps before then:
1. Gather Required Materials
Textbook:
Etkina, Gentile, and Van Heuvelen. College Physics. San
Francisco: Pearson, 2014. (E-text with access to
MasteringPhysics® online study resources)
