Core Learning Unit

•
The NHS Core Learning Unit (NHS CLU) was established in October 2005.
•
A strategic decision was taken in order that the ‘learning’ developed by the likes of
the NHSU was not lost, for the NHS CLU to reside within Yorkshire and Humber
Strategic Health Authority.
•
The aim being that the NHS CLU would be a ‘training, education and development
resource’ for the NHS through the new SHA’s.
•
The Electronic Learning products are designed to be accessed via the NHS CLU’s
web site www.clu.nhs.uk where NHS colleagues can register on-line for a user
account.
•
There is a change to the Managed Learning Environment’s as Intuition now have
the ‘Core’ programmes. This will give the enhanced level of tracking which has been
requested.
– One very important point is that the programmes can only be accessed via a
link, and not by being loaded onto Managed Learning Environment’s.
•
The NHS CLU programmes are accredited courses and are mapped to the key
national standards such as the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF), Risk
management standards of the NHS Litigation Authority, standards for better health
and where relevant the hospital technical memorandum.
GOOD NEWS - June 20, 2007

This means that NHS Trusts in England can continue to use the Core Learning Unit
learning resources and services without being charged individually as the funding has
already been provided by each of the SHAs.

Developments
– The Infection Control programme is being altered so that it is appropriate
for use in a ‘Social Care’ setting.
– Each of the 3 Statutory & Mandatory programmes have been evaluated
by their ‘Expert Reference Groups’ and are currently being updated. New
versions will be launched in the new year.
Implications of the change of platform
– This will enable all the programmes to be accessed on local ‘Virtual
Learning Environment’s’ via the interoperability solution.
– The need for the use of Java virtual machine has been removed. We
recognise that this was one of the biggest stumbling blocks in IT terms.
– The general performance and reliability has increased and this has been
shown by the performance of the ‘Infection Control’ site widely held to be
superior to that of the old previous platform.
– Tracking and Statistics
• Tracking information will still be available however the new system
will be clearer to use and will eventually be fully automated, meaning
that administrators will no longer need to extract the information
themselves but will be automatically emailed a report on a regular
basis.

Benefits of using the CLU programmes
– Affordable training solution.
– Staff receive the training that they require.
– The training is quality assured by ‘Expert Reference Groups’, which are
made up of subject expects from the service. This means that you know
the training that your staff receive is fit for purpose and responsive to any
policy changes.
– As everyone receives the same high standard of training, this is therefore
transferable amongst organisations.
– Learners can complete their training anywhere, anytime and at their own
pace.
Blended approach
– It is important to remember that all the programmes are designed to be
as part of a blended approach to training.
– They are designed to provide everyone with the background level of
knowledge they need so that local trainers are free to focus on other
more specialised areas of training.
• Tips
– Ensure that your IT department is onboard and make sure that the
computers that staff are using are up to the necessary standard
(we have a list of requirements that can be provided).
– Appoint local administrators to monitor learner progress.
– Have someone within the trust to lead on the project so that they
can sort out any local issues that may arise.
– Ensure all managers are aware of the programmes to facilitate the
rollout to their specific group of users.
– If possible having launch days. Robin Beck will be happy to
supply packs of materials to support these days and possibly
provide someone to come and help demonstrate the programmes
on one of the launch days depending on availability within the
CLU team.
– Incorporate the programmes into Personal Development Plans
and Trusts KSF.
• Success stories
– The Infection Control programme now has over 40,000 registered
users across the NHS in England since it’s launch in October
2005.
• Feedback
– Users can complete the learner feedback questionnaire on the
CLU site.
• Opportunities to get involved
– All new programmes will need to be trialled so there is the
possibility for organisations to get involved in this process.
• Statistics
– Please see attached report.
Conclusion
• Edward de Bono produced the 6-Thinking hats using a
different colour:
– “to describe the thinking process that's required in a
given situation, and to define how someone IS
thinking without appearing critical”.
• There are an abundance of training, education and
training resources available:
– The challenge is to know where these resources are,
how to access them and where to use them in our
organisations.
