Who is an adult learner?
 An adult learner is a student who is:
 24 years of age or older, or
 a veteran of the armed services, or active duty service member, or
 returning to school after four or more years of employment, homemaking or
other activity, or
 assuming multiple roles, such as parent, spouse/partner, employee, and
student.

Nondegree and provisional students who plan to earn a
Penn State degree must be admitted to degree status.
Nondegree/provisional students are eligible to apply for
admission to an associate degree program after
completing nine credits with a 2.0 overall grade-point
average or a baccalaureate degree program after
completing eighteen credits with a 2.0 overall grade-point
average. In addition, any Carnegie Unit requirements
(math and/or foreign language) of the college of
enrollment that were not completed in high school must
be satisfied by completing college-level substitutes.
Courses taken at other regionally accredited colleges or
universities may be accepted for transfer when students

During the fall and spring semesters, over 400 computer
workstations running the Windows 7 operating system are
available for student use in twelve different public
computer labs across campus. The 26- seat Hammermill
135 Cyber Lounge and the 55-seat John M. Lilley Library
computer lab are always available on a walk-in basis, with
the remaining ten labs having the option to be reserved for
instructional support. Twenty-four hour computing
services are provided in the Hammermill 135 Cyber
Lounge, Nick 155, Nick 156, Burke 153, Burke 175 and
Burke 176 labs.

The LINUX operating system is hosted on a dedicated
server and is accessible via an X-Win emulator from any

All members of the Behrend campus population can gain
after-hours access to the twenty-four hour labs by swiping
their Penn State ID card through the card readers provided
outside the Nick/Hammermill lab complex or the Burke
Center. Penn State Student Access Accounts are required
to utilize any computer lab facilities, making the lab
resources unavailable to the general public.

Confidentiality of Student Records
The University will disclose no information from records,
files, and data directly relevant to a student to anyone
outside the University without the written consent of the
student. Such information may be shared without consent
by officials within the University, if appropriate, and to
third parties specifically authorized by FERPA.
The
following information may be released without student
consent: name, address, telephone number, class level,
major, enrollment status, student activities, weight/height,
dates of attendance, date of graduation, degrees and
awards received, and most recent educational institution
attended. Any student wishing to restrict the release of
this directory information must complete a form available
in the Registrar’s office. Timing of the request may
preclude restricting the publication of such information in
some directories and other published materials.
Access Accounts, which are created by the Accounts
Office at University Park, are available for retrieval
through computerized Signature Stations in the Computer
Center’s Hammermill 135 Cyber Lounge, in the
Registrar’s office (Metzgar Admissions and Alumni
Center), in the Senat Hall Housing Office lobby, and at
the Burke 162 Help Desk. Once your registration and
class scheduling have been processed, you will be able to
obtain your Access Account at any of the four Signature
Stations. Computer Lab Consultants are available daily
until 9:00 PM to assist users with the operation of the
Signature Station in the Hammermill 135 Cyber Lounge
or at the Burke 162 Help Desk. Limited weekend support
is also available. Call 898-6250 for weekend Help Desk
hours.
Other services provided by the Computer Center include
operational, hardware, and software support for the in-lab
computers, support for campus e-mail/Web kiosks
wireless network support (setup and troubleshooting),
black-and-white laser printing, and personal laptop
troubleshooting, to name a few.

Photocopies are one of the most common needs of college
students, but it is only one of the services offered by the
Copy and Multimedia Center to the Penn State Behrend
community. Other services include resume copying,
color copies, color posters, color transparencies, binding,
laminating, scanning, and faxing; all at a reasonable cost.

CMC maintains three self-serve copiers which are located
in the John M. Lilley Library, the Prischak Bldg., and the
Burke Center. All campus copiers use the Penn State ID+
card as the only method of purchasing copies. Cash
cannot be accepted; copies are ten cents each.

Academic Advising and Academic Records: provides
students with expert-based academic advising,
including tailored responses based on individual
student input, student academic history, and University
policy. It also provides students with access to their
academic records. Student access ranges from viewing
semester grades, transcript information, and current
course schedules to updating address information, bill
payment, and requesting e-mail copies of degree
audits.

Campus Police Services officers are on duty on a twentyfour hour basis and can be contacted directly at 898-6231
or 911 in the event of any emergency, accident, or illness.
You may wish to provide your childcare provider or
family member with your classroom schedule. This will
reduce response time should a police officer need to

The Penn State Behrend Early Learning Center is a
NAEYC accredited child care program for children
between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 years. Degreed
teachers, low staff-to-child ratios and a primary

campus. Each phone is mounted in a brown tower with a

blue light on top. Touching the button located next to the
speaker grill activates the phone. It will automatically dial
Police Services, where a dispatcher will answer the call.
The emergency outdoor telephones are at the following

Erie Hall parking lot; two are located along the Behrend
Fields’ walkway; one is located on the north side of Almy
Hall; one is located on the south side of Almy Hall; one is
located at the Ohio Hall Lot; one at the Ohio Hall 2 nd
Floor Entrance; one at the Ohio/Behrend Path; one by the
Chapel Walkway; one in the Junker Center Parking Lot;
one is located on the Lower Walkway to the Junker
Center; and one at the ball fields. Additional emergency
phones are located in and around the Burke Center and in
all of the residence halls.

House, provides comprehensive health services for
students, including complete women's health care,
immunizations, and allergy injections. The center is
staffed by health care providers who are board certified in
sports medicine and forensic care. The team includes
physicians, a family nurse practitioner, a medical
assistant,
registered
nurses
and
an
office
manager/outreach coordinator.
Police Services can also provide safety escorts. These
escorts are handled on a case-by-case basis and may be
conducted by an officer in a vehicle or on foot. Escorts
are intended for individuals who are concerned about
personal safety and are for on-campus use only.
Appointments are requested. Walk-in patients are
welcome and will be worked into the schedule. There is a
nominal fee for consultations with the health care
providers. Medications including contraceptives are
available at a minimal cost. Charges for visits,
medications, supplies, and laboratory tests may be billed
to the students' accounts; Lion Cash, cash and checks are
also accepted. Detailed receipts with the appropriate
ICD9 codes are provided for students to submit to their
insurance carriers.
When calling for assistance, be sure to inform the
dispatcher as to the nature of the request.
Evening Credit Program

Penn State Behrend offers three associate degree
programs and three baccalaureate degrees for evening
completion. The associate degrees are General Business
(2GBBC), Letters, Arts, and Sciences (2LABC), and
Mechanical Engineering Technology (2MET). The
baccalaureate degrees are General Arts and Sciences
(GAS), Mechanical Engineering Technology (METBD)
and Project and Supply Chain Management (PSCM). For

It is recommended that all students have medical
insurance. Penn State student insurance applications are

Financial Aid

Full-time and part-time degree and provisional students
may apply for financial aid by completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The 20122013 FAFSA must be completed for the 2012-2013
academic year. Eligibility depends on a number of factors
including income, household size, number of students in
college, and satisfactory academic progress. The 20132014 FAFSA will be available January 1, 2013 for the
2013-2014 academic year. Penn State recommends filing
the FAFSA by March 1 for maximum aid consideration.
ID Office
A student identification card (id+ card) is issued to all
new students before or during their first enrollment period
at the University. It is the student’s responsibility to have
a photograph taken upon arrival. This card, bearing the
student’s name, photograph, and ID number, should be
carried for proper student identification; library access,
Junker Center access, book buy-back, room access, meal
plans and copy, merchants, vending, and newspaper
services.
The FAFSA may be completed on line at
http://fafsa.ed.gov. Penn State’s school code for the
FAFSA is 003329. Once Penn State receives your
FAFSA data, your eligibility for financial aid will be
determined. Current students can monitor their financial
aid status on their eLion Student Aid Summary.
If the card is lost or stolen, students should immediately
suspend their card by going online at idcard.psu.edu. The
University is not responsible for expense resulting from
the loss, theft, or misuse of the card. Cards will be
replaced for a fee of $15.00. Fraudulent use of this card
will result in disciplinary action.

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides free
tutoring to all Penn State Behrend students. Tutoring is
available on a drop-in basis for writing, math, and
selected engineering and business courses. Hours are

The LRC has a new online scheduling program for byappointment tutoring. Students need to register with their

With its inviting atmosphere, comfortable study space,
and a wealth of print and electronic resources, The Penn
State Erie John M. Lilley Library provides an ideal setting
for study and research. Students may study individually,
or work in small groups with the options of using library
workstations or accessing the wireless network.
The library houses over 135,000 volumes. A large video
collection houses educational materials as well as popular
movies. Through the online catalog, users can access the
5 million additional volumes in the other Penn State
libraries. A wide array of electronic databases and

All automobiles must be registered if the vehicle is parked
or operated on campus. Students must apply for their
semester parking permits on-line via the Penn State
Behrend website. Temporary parking permits are
available at the Office of Police Services and may be
obtained for $4 per day. Parking permits are valid for
parking only in the areas designated in the Parking Rules
and Regulations Handbook, which is available at the
Office of Police Services and the Police Services Web
page. Any questions regarding vehicle registration or
parking regulations should be directed to the Office of
Police Services.
The library staff assists students in finding resources to
answer specific questions, and instructs students in the
use of printed and computerized sources. Instruction is
provided formally through class sessions and informally
at the reference desk. Reference librarians are available
Students may now apply for their Parking Permit for the
2012-2013 school year. Permits may be submitted

immediately but will not be available for pickup until
after August 15th. From that point on it will take
approximately 1 business day to process their permit. All
permits will be billed to their student accounts. There is a

web site. An e-mail with a link to the form has been sent
to every student that is scheduled for the fall semester.

Returning Adult Student Organization (RASO)
The purpose of this organization is to promote the
concerns of returning adult students and to provide
friendship and support for returning adults and their
families. RASO is a club for students who may be parttime or full-time, seeking a degree or taking courses for

Vending Machines
Many adult students successfully return to college to
obtain a degree. However, they often have unique
responsibilities such as marriage, children, work and care
of aging parents. The time and commitment needed to
complete a degree program and balance such
responsibilities can be a challenge.
Coffee or soda machines are located in the upper level of
the Nick Building, the Otto Behrend Science Building, the
Hammermill Building, the upper level of Erie Hall, the
lower level of the Reed Union Building, the upper level of
Kochel Center, and the lower level of Burke Center.
Many of these machines accept the Lion Cash feature on
the ID+ card.
If you are having difficulties and would like support, the
Personal Counseling staff offer free and confidential
services to all Behrend students.

Individuals on campus who may be eligible for VA
education benefits must apply to access available VA
education benefits. This one-time application for Chapters
1606, 1607, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 901, and 903 should be
completed as soon as possible. Students will need to
provide supporting documentation such as the DD 214,
member 4 copy, the NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility)
and the DD22-1990. Because each chapter has specific
eligibility requirements, an appointment with a veteran
counselor is required. Enrollments will be certified every
semester to the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA).
Eligibility for VA education benefits can only be
determined by the DVA.

Reed Union Building Information Desk
All armed forces personnel who have completed basic
training are eligible to apply for health and ESACT
credits, regardless of their eligibility for education
benefits. The Request for Credit Acquisition form is
available in the campus VA office.
Veterans who are Pennsylvania residents are given
priority for Pennsylvania state grant consideration. These
monies are accessed via the FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) form. The FAFSA must be
processed by May 1st for the upcoming academic year.
Pennsylvania state grants are only available to students
who are taking at least six credits. A maximum of $3,978
per year may be awarded to a student who is enrolled fulltime. For additional information, contact the Financial

located in the Office of Student Activities) is the central
location in which students, faculty, staff, and visitors can
obtain a variety of information about college locations,
