Fiona Bell, as Regional Coordinator of IGBIS KZN welcomed everyone to the IGBIS KZN first meeting
of the year.
It was requested that any apologies sent should be entered in the register. Msunduzi’s email
regarding lack of transport was noted.
No comments /corrections re previous Minutes. These were accepted as delivered.
`
DUT: Department reduced to 4 cataloguers who catalogue all resource types.
eTHEKWINI: A cat vacancy was advertised & interviews completed ; 2 additional posts have been
unfrozen and will be advertised in due course – the Cat Department looks forward to resuming
authority control maintenance; procurement procedures have changed resulting in delays with
serials subscriptions in particular which now have to be put out to tender – public services have
been negatively impacted.
KZN Province: Cats are short-staffed since Irene Gordon retired but routine work is continuing.
UKZN: The Cat Department has grown: there are now 7 cataloguers with 2 contract cats; there has
been lots of extra work since centralising cataloguing for UKZN; the situation is under review and it
is hoped there will be 11 cats eventually as there are lots of projects underway+ repository work
and all branch libraries’ records.
UKZN LIS DEPT: There are 22 students doing cataloguing this year: not all have aptitude for
cataloguing; they have been set an essay on the main points of difference in RDA; the Department
has also been involved in NGPLIS students, one of whom has landed a position @UCT.
MUT: Cat Department is “overloaded and understaffed” with only 2 cats left; acquisitions is also
short-staffed so that has impacted the cats.
UNIZUL: Cat Department is also down to only 2 cats with Subject Librarians working hard to assist;
Claribel Ntuli is sadly missed since her passing a few months back; Brenda van Wyk has resigned.
Cats were reminded that SABINET is acting as an agent for the Toolkit or it can be done directly
with publisher; the RDA Steering Committee has asked SABINET to enquire about possibility of
arranging a special deal for S. Africa that can be packaged with SABINET subscription or as a SANLIC
arrangement; only DUT has begun subscribing; Msunduzi is in the process of doing so.

General
Closing
2013 Meetings -
Cats were reminded that it had been agreed that 3 meetings a year should be held & hopefully 1 of
these would include training. Nora was thanked for agreeing to host this meeting @UKZN at short
notice. Cats will be notified of future meeting venues, at least one of which will be in Maritzburg.
LIASA KZN news
- LIASA KZN hosted the launch of SA Library Week at Durban University of Technology, with a guest
speaker, followed by a lunch and various other activities being held.
- The SALW poster drew lots of attention and comment – having been designed by a newspaper
cartoonist.
SOSC news
- (RDA matters – as covered under RDA training later in Agenda)
RDA Steering - The RDA SA Steering Committee met in Pretoria earlier in March 2013.
Committee
- The National Library is planning to roll out training to S Africa, possibly making use of 4 regional
meeting
hubs/centers and the “train the trainer” approach as per the RDA survey responses.
- A website has been launched regarding RDA implementation in South Africa:
- It was suggested that Heads of Libraries be sent a letter outlining the planning required for RDA
implementation in order that libraries are prepared for costs/impact. Members were informed that
the Communications Sub-Committee is apparently planning such a communique, as well as
presentations to various bodies e.g. CHELSA plus a major launch @ LIASA Conference later in 2013.
RDA training - An IGBIS National Workshop is planned for 6-7 June 2013 and will be held @UNISA in Pretoria.
Registration is R1100 for LIASA members and R1300 for non-members; with daily rate being R700
& R800 respectively. Day 1 will cover FRBR & Core Book Record in RDA compared with AACRII and
Day 2 will cover Access Points (Personal/Corporate names; Uniform titles; Series).
- IGBIS plans to take the Workshop to Cape Town and possibly Bloemfontein. KZN would only be
considered if numbers were great enough.
- After discussion members agreed that RDA training now would be premature as most libraries
don’t have the Toolkit yet & haven’t planned to commence RDA cataloguing. They would prefer to
wait for NLSA training later in year /2014, by which time Toolkit subs are likely to be in place.
Dealing with - Members discussed current OCLC requirements/guidelines regarding RDA records & they are
