XP Edition, Introductory (Spiral Bound) by
Shelly, Cashman & Vermaat
3. USB Memory Key (Jump Drive) OR IBM
compatible 100 MB ZIP disk
4. Floppy disk – 1.44 Megabytes, double sided,
high density (minimum of one, two preferred)

Weekly Lab Class Routine
1. Turn in your homework when you come in
the classroom (stapled please!)
2. Take a 3 point quiz to start the class (come
to class on time or miss the quiz)
3. Learn how to use the software application of
the week
4. Go over the homework assignments due
next lab.
5. Repeat 11 times! 

Need To Pass CIS 55 Lab?
•
Students must obtain at least 100 points out of a possible 165 lab points to
pass CIS 55.
•
Students who do not obtain at least 100 points in the lab portion of CIS 55 will
receive a grade of F for the entire course, regardless of the grade earned in
the lecture portion of the course. There will be no exceptions to this rule.
Point Breakdown:
95 lab points + 40 Final lab exam + ten 3point exams = 165 points
100 / 165 = 60.6%
The lab portion of this course is worth 30% of your final CIS 55 Course grade
for those who earn 100 points or more in lab.

Goals of Lab
To have a basic understanding of Operating System software and computer literacy with MS Office.
To have a working knowledge of collaborative software, such as e-mail and listserv
Use a word processor (Word) to create and edit documents, including a term paper, and publish the
documents to the World Wide Web.
Use presentation software (PowerPoint) to develop a multi-media presentation based on researching a
specific topic. Publish the presentation to the World Wide Web.
To develop a web site using sound design techniques to publish course documents and incorporate multimedia components.
Use spreadsheet software (Excel) to analyze numerical, financial and statistical data, present data in
chart format and publish numerical data to the World Wide Web.
Use a database management software package (Access) to organize, create, search, and manage a
database.

Students are expected to arrive on time for their scheduled lab.
All lab work must be done individually.
Lab consultants are not permitted to help students with homework.
Students must provide their own zip disks and floppy disks.
IM, IRC or CHAT are not allowed during the lab.
Students may not print during the lab.
No food or drinks are permitted in the labs.
If you must speak to your classmate please whisper.

OS Definition: It is the set of computer instructions called a computer
program, that controls the allocation of a computer hardware such as
memory, diskdrives, printers and CD Roms and provides the capabilities
for you to communicate with the computer.

Windows features:
- Desktop, Recycle bin ,Network Places, My Docs, Control Panel (after SP2), Dialogue Box
- Minimize, maximize and resize windows
- Backing up –process of copying files to a separate disk to protect original files
- Format -
command used to prepare a disk for use by the computer
- Windows Explorer- is an application program that allows you view the contents of the computer, the
hierarchy of drives and folders on the computer, and the files and folders in each folder
- File Management, Create and move files and folders (use Windows Explorer)
