3.OA.D.8. Solve two-step word problems using the four operations.
Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental
computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
(This standard is limited to problems posed with whole numbers and
having whole-number answers; students should know how to perform
operations in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to
specify a particular order (Order of Operations).
Ted bought 14 boxes of chocolate candy
and gave 7 to his little brother. If each box
has 6 pieces inside it, how many pieces did
Ted still have?
A painter needed to paint 10 rooms in a
building. Each room takes 8 hours to paint.
If he already painted 8 rooms, how much
longer will he take to paint the rest?
Luke made nine dollars mowing lawns and
eighteen dollars weeding. If he only spent
three dollars a week, how many weeks will
the money last him?
Jerry is at the library helping put away
books. There are eighty-five total books to
put away but a librarian takes four of them
and leaves Jerry with the rest. If he can fit
nine books on a shelf, how many shelves
will he need?
Mike invited 13 friends to a birthday party,
but 7 couldn't come. If he wanted to buy
enough cupcakes so each person could
have exactly 4, how many should he buy?
A waiter had nine tables he was waiting on.
There were seven adults and three children
at each table. How many customers total did
the waiter have?
A pet store has six bird cages. If each cage
has six parrots and two parakeets in it, how
many birds does the pet store have total?
Haley's favorite band was holding a concert
where tickets were four dollars each. Haley
bought three tickets for herself and her
friends and five extra tickets in case anyone
else wanted to go. How much did she
spend?
Dave made fifty-three dollars mowing lawns
over the summer. If he spent four dollars
buying new mower blades, how many seven
dollar games could he buy with the money
he had left?
Edward and his friend were buying trick
decks from the magic shop for nine dollars
each. How much did they spend if Edward
bought four decks and his friend bought four
decks?
For homework Nancy had seventeen math
problems and fifteen spelling problems. If
she can finish eight problems in an hour how
long will it take her to finish all the
problems?
Olivia was making baggies of cookies with
nine cookies in each bag. If she had thirteen
chocolate chip cookies and forty-one
oatmeal cookies, how many baggies could
she make?
Robin uploaded thirty-five pictures from her
phone and five from her camera to
Facebook. If she sorted the pics into five
different albums with the same amount of
pics in each album, how many pictures were
in each of the albums?
A company invited fifty-nine people to a
luncheon, but five of them didn't show up. If
the tables they had held six people each,
how many tables do they need?
Tom was putting his spare change into piles.
He had two piles of quarters and four piles
of dimes. If each pile had five coins in it, how
many coins did he have total?

Henry had ninety-six dollars. If he spent
thirty-three bucks on a new game, how
many nine dollar toys could he buy with the
money he had left?
Wendy bought four new chairs and four new
tables for her house. If she spent six
minutes on each piece furniture putting it
together, how many minutes did it take her
to finish?
The school's baseball team had forty-eight
new players and six returning players. If the
coach put them into groups with six players
in each group, how many groups would
there be?
At the town carnival Oliver rode the ferris
wheel five times and the bumper cars four
times. If each ride cost seven tickets, how
many tickets did he use?
Vanessa's team won their dodgeball game
and scored thirteen points total. If Vanessa
scored three of the points and everyone else
scored five points each, how many players
were on her team?
A waiter had fifty-eight customers in his
section. If two of them left and the rest of his
tables had seven people at each table, how
many tables did he have?
Katie was selling her necklaces at a garage
sale. She sold 4 bead necklaces and 3 gem
stone necklaces. If each necklace cost 3
dollars and she sold all of them, how much
money did she earn?
