The world of Harry Potter is full of strange and unusual creatures. Hagrid teaches the course Care of Magical
Creatures. Help Harry, Hermione, and Ron solve the following multiple allele crosses for Hagrid’s class. Be
sure to follow all five steps and answer any questions.
Carefully read the following paragraph about the multiple alleles found in dragons:
Dragon breeding is a dangerous business. There are several types of dragons in
the world and many of them are rare and hard to find. There are three main types
of dragons; ridgebacks, horntails, and longhorns. Longtails and horntails are codominant and when crossed will create a horned-longtails (a very dangerous
breed). Ridgebacks are very rare as they are recessive to both other types of
dragon. Use the table below to help:
Longtails – LL or Lr
Horntails – HH or Hr
Horned-longtails - LH
Ridgebacks – rr
Hagrid asked each student to partner two dragons that would yield four different types of dragon.
Who was successful?
1. Harry crossed a Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon with a Canadian Horned-longtail.
2. Ginny crossed a pure German Horntail with a pure Japanese Longtail.
3. Hermione crossed a hybrid Chilean Horntail with a hybrid Spanish Longtail.
4. Ron crossed an American Horned-longtail and a Russian Ridgeback.
5. Neville crossed two Indian Horned-longtails.
