ISO/TS Networking group meeting
Monday, April 8, 2013
Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at Kent Trumbull Campus, 4314 Mahoning Avenue
NW, Warren, Ohio 44483, in the Workforce Development building, Room 211W. Sign-in and Pre-Technical
sessions start at 5:30 PM and main speakers start at 6:15 PM. Both members and non-members are welcome
to attend either or both sessions free of charge. Please invite your associates. For those who make
reservations, food and refreshments will be served at 6:00 PM at the cost of $6.00 per person.

5:30 – 6:00 PM: Pre-Technical: Statistical Process Control (SPC)
Learn the benefits of implementing SPC within an organization. We will discuss the seven major SPC tools to
identify improvement opportunities, reduce variability and eliminate waste: (1) Histograms, (2) Check Sheets,
(3) Pareto Charts, (4) Cause and Effect Diagrams, (5) Defect Concentration Diagrams, (6) Scatter Diagrams and
(7) Control Charts.
BIO: Michael Valiski, Northern States Metals
Mike is a Quality Engineer at Northern States Metals. He received his B.E. in Industrial & Systems Engineering
at YSU in 2003, his SSGB through IIE in 2010 and ASQ-CQE in 2010. He is working on his graduate degree in
Industrial & Systems Engineering at YSU and teaches Engineering Statistics and Statistical Quality Control parttime at YSU.

Lean Six Sigma is the well-proven methodology for accomplishing breakthrough improvement in process
efficiency and quality. Successful application of Lean Six Sigma requires learning all levels of the organization.
Kent State Trumbull offers a learning approach that blends classroom and online instruction in a series of
classes that are tailored for top management, front line work associates, managers and team leaders, and
technical specialists.
This presentation will provide:
 An overview of Lean Six Sigma
 Examples of its successful application in manufacturing, service, and healthcare
 Description of the Lean Six Sigma blended learning classes offered by Kent State Trumbull
BIO : Tom Fazekas
Tom is a trainer and consultant dedicated to helping organizations improve their performance through
development of their people. He has been privileged to work with organizations that are already leaders in
their fields but are committed to continually improve. Tom helps top management establish and deploy their
strategic objectives, and he teaches people at all levels of the organization the tools they need to develop and
execute tactical plans to achieve the objectives they have been given.
His approach emphasizes the clear definition of the processes by which the organization satisfies the needs of
the customers and of the business. His insightful questions and deep listening help the organization discover
opportunities to measure and improve those processes. His approach emphasizes collaboration and creativity
to develop the outstanding leadership and highly responsive teams needed for continuous improvement and
sustainable results.
As a trainer, Tom emphasizes the practical application of continual improvement tools and techniques.
Training participants develop work/life skills for critical assessment, for recognizing root causes of problems,
and for streamlining processes to enhanced customer satisfaction.
Experience
Tom received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University. He is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black
Belt and holds certifications with Kepner-Tregoe Problem Solving and Decision Making, 8D Team Oriented
Problem Solving, and ISO 9001:2000 Internal Auditing. Tom’s prior professional experience includes roles in
engineering, quality, and operations management. Since 1986, his consulting practice has focused on
developing skills for organizational excellence. Clients include United Airlines, University Hospitals, Cox
Communications, Ohio Saving Bank, St. Ives- USA, Mallinckrodt Chemical, Pierre’s Ice Cream, Parma General
Hospital, Northern States Metals and the Cleveland Indians.
