Section One - Description of Rating Scale
Problem
1. The purpose of this rubric is to assess if athletes can maintain their season VO2max during the offseason through interval cardiovascular training.
Refining the Problem
2.
This rubric is for coaches to keep their athletes in good shape and avoid overtraining in the beginning of
the season. It is important for athletes to maintain their fitness levels throughout the year so they can
avoid injury and overtraining when the season starts. This assessment will be given to high school
athletes playing soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, or basketball.
3. This rating scale would be used for overseeing the improvement of an athlete’s performance by
maintaining VO2max levels during the off-season. It is assessing how fit the athletes are and what they
are capable of. The hope is to improve the athletes VO2max so they can perform better in college and/or
professionally. This assessment would be given at the beginning of the season. It will be necessary to
record the athletes VO2max and baseline assessment at the end of the previous season so they results
can be compared.
4. I chose this type of evaluation because I felt it was important to be able to assess the change through
specific variable.
a. Assessment of VO2max: To know if the athlete has improved, you must know what their
VO2max is before and after the season.
b. Assessment of Client’s Fitness Level: This is also an important component to look for. This
allows the coach to find baseline levels beyond VO2max, such as heart rate, blood pressure,
and flexibility.
c. Use of Equipment and Resources: It is important to assess if the athlete followed the
interval training plan and used any equipment necessary.
d. Speed: Since running is a main part of these sports, it is important to see if speed is
maintained or improved.
e. Assessment of Overall Athlete Performance: It is important to assess how each individual
athlete has improved in their specific area.
Instrumentation and Methodology
5. The scale I created has three categories
a. Good: This is the highest grade you could get on this scale would be 5 points. This category
means that the assessment was very good.
b. Fair: This is the middle grade and is worth 3 points. It means that the assessment was good,
but needs improvement.
c. Poor: This is the lowest grade and it is worth 1 point. It means that the assessment was not
good and that is a definite need for improvement.
6. This test administrator would need to have knowledge on what the interval training program for be.
They would need to be educated in this field. The test administrator would just need to consult the
instructor of the program the find out what measures were taken and how in depth.
Analysis of Results
7. This rubric is considered a summative evaluation. For this scale having 25 total points is the goal. This is
a result of receiving the highest marks in all categories. Having a 5 is the lowest grade an instructor
could receive. That being said the scale results in a letter grade by adding the points up

e.
24-16= B
15 = C (Fair)
14-6 = D
