Lesson Plan: Researching Spanish Activist that are Famous and are in the Media Overview Students will research Spanish Activist such as Juanes and Shakira they are famous people and are in the music industry they both have causes they participate in Juanes in raising awareness about social problems including the situation with homeless children in his home country of Columbia and Shakira is involved with Unicef. Information on what they are involved with and how they have incorporated their fame and music into their organization and passion. Students may also find other famous activist and their causes if they wish. These are current issues and the power and ideas are significant, many Hispanics activist have been involved in different areas. Their significance are throughout history. Become familiar with historical eras, groups, individuals, and themes Geography Use geographic tools to research, gather data and ask questions Use Google Maps Understand geographic variables and how they affect people Length of Lesson Two 50-minute lessons (more if additional time is needed for research) Tools Computer Lab time for the Research Use Google for research information Use Google Docs that will be the Main source for this project Rationale Students are interested in music and with this assignment students will be able to connect cultural pop world of music in Latin America with the social reality of some of the countries there. They may also with this assignment if other activist are picked may have a broader understanding of the importance of Hispanics culture and their impact on important social issues. Objectives Students will be able to: Google Docs is a web based word processing students do not need to have or purchase office suites. They can have access to their documents in class or any computer accessible. With Google Docs they may add links, customize document, change fonts and edit. Drag and drop photos Insert bookmarks to have access to reference pages quickly. Students can work collaboratively from home or school. Prepare a written research paper. Identify from their research on the area about the celebrities, their cause, people that are effected, etc. and select a song to reflect that theme if applicable if Juanes and Shakira are not chosen then the theme song does not apply. Procedure Day 1 Students will pick their desired Activist. They will be directed to the Computer Lab, the teacher will instruct the class on how to access google docs and an overview of what google docs can provide them for their research. They will then brainstorm on the topic. Day 2 Students will then be directed to the Computer Lab to finish their research paper. If they have not finished doing their research paper during class time they may finish at home. With the availability of Google Docs the Students can work collaboratively from home or school to help them with their assignment. Evaluation: An evaluation and grading will be weight on content and creativity of information. Discussion: There will be a discussion in class on the about the research and the personalities chosen.
