Our Parish Mission Statement

Gathered as a family of faith in Christ Jesus, strengthened by His

Word and Sacraments, we will set a living example of our faith by:

 Seeking Christ in all we meet

Giving of our time, talent and treasure

 Supporting and strengthening our community and

 Sharing our Faith

Dear Parish Family,

If there’s one event you will want to “live” this Lent, it will have to be THE QUIET

EVENING WITH OUR LORD,

Tuesday, March 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Two Precious

Blood Priests, Fr. Scott Kramer and another priest will open the “evening” with a brief

Penance Service and Exposition of the

Blessed Sacrament and then the two will hear confessions until 8 p.m. when Fr. Scott will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed

Sacrament. What a fantastic way to gain the

Mercy Jubilee Plenary Indulgence (with

attending Mass on the weekends).

To continue from last week’s letter,

“But then, why confession to a priest?

Why can I not just turn to Jesus in

my heart? No, the cross was public

and visible; reconciliation is visible and sacramental. Just so, the priest is the ambassador of Christ, the minister of Christ exercising Christ’s power to forgive sin. So the

Risen Lord says to the Apostles:

“Receive the

Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven. And whose sins you retain, they are retained.” And this relieves us of the burden and pride of judging ourselves before God.

Which we do, willy nilly, if we do not confess to the minister of Christ. Confession is what follows from the transaction of the cross. It’s the way incarnate mercy works.

One of the key moments in Confession occurs when the priest asks the penitent to say an “ACT OF CONTRITION.” What exactly is contrition? Authentic contrition takes various forms. One is “perfect” and the other

“imperfect.” The reality that characterizes perfect contrition is the presence of the virtue of charity or LOVE of GOD above all else, and the hatred for sin because it is contrary to our common life and friendship. Because charity or love of God is present, perfect contrition forgives all sins (even grave sins). Moreover, it always includes the firm resolution to go to confession as soon as possible.

Imperfect contrition is sorrow for sin because of the fear of eternal damnation and other penalties threatening the sinner.

Because it lacks the divine friendship of charity, however, imperfect contrition does not obtain the forgiveness of grave sins.

To know what kind of contrition a penitent brings to confession, ask Am I sorry for my sins because I feel a profound love of God, or merely because I am afraid of the punishments that follow upon the sins I have committed? In his mercy, our Lord has given us an infallible means of ensuring the presence of perfect contrition in our soul. He has given us the gift of confession. In the Sacrament of

Reconciliation, Jesus always imparts the grace of charity that makes contrition perfect. He actually forgives our sins when we go to confession. Even if a sinner only has imperfect contrition when he or she approaches the confessional, perfect contrition and the forgiveness of sins is truly caused within the sacrament. Our Savior always perfects what is imperfect in the sorrow of those who draw near to the sacrament of his mercy.”

When the Evening with Our Lord approaches, March 8, there will be papers available the weekend before and on the evening itself that will tell you what to actually say to the priest when you go to confession (not the sins). You won’t have to memorize anything, not even an act of contrition. No fear, no anxiety, no doubts…please. Our dear Lord is shrouded in MERCY…and he died to share it with YOU. It would be terrific if the family would come on this evening, and those who are eligible to receive the sacrament would receive the great RECONCILIATION the

MERCY OF GOD provides. This sacrament is also the great

HEALING every family longs to possess.
