Dramarama!
Lesson 6 – Hey Diddle Diddle
Learning Aim:
 Students will make relevant suggestions and recall events from a rhyme to re-enact
storylines.
Introduction to Topic:
 Warm-up game: See Teacher Resource 1 for 2 options.
Main Activity: Mime and Movement - Voices
 Show students the rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle – Teacher Resource 3. Read it to
students in a normal voice. Discuss the rhyme – who are the characters, what are they
doing, is it realistic etc.
 Tell students that in Drama we can use different voices for characters and also for
narrating the story. Read the rhyme once again using a different “voice” – (for example;
very dramatic, exaggerate the words, in a sad/angry/very happy/silly way, etc.). Now
ask students what other types of “voices” we can use to say the rhyme – discuss, make
a list and then let them have a go if they want. Try a few different ways.
 Ask students if different “voices” would need different actions - if students are
comfortable add actions/role-play the rhyme all together.
Key Vocabulary:
 Fiddle, cat, cow, moon, dog,
dish, spoon
Additional Activities:
 See song book for additional songs
 See resource book for more warm up games.
Reflection/Story:
 Read “Hey diddle diddle” (Kate Toms) with the different animals. If students are game,
see Teacher Resource 6 for an action verbs activity.
Closing:
 Carpet time: ask children what they have learnt today.
 Sing the rhyme all together or watch the youtube clips.

Extension Activities for 2-hour Drama Class:
1. Interview Skills
A. Speaking / Logic and Reasoning: In the nursery rhyme, the dish runs away with the
spoon. Some people (e.g., Filipinos) use spoons to eat. Ask the students to brainstorm other
eating utensils (fork, knife, chopsticks, training chopsticks) and make a list on the board.
(Pictures of cutlery available in Resource 9).
Explain to the students that you will show them several pictures of food (Resource 10). Ask
the students to identify the dish and say which utensil(s) they would use to eat this dish. Are
there any utensils they would not use? Why?
B. Drawing / Presenting Information: Explain to the students that they are going to draw a
picture of their favourite dish. (Resource 11 (Separate attachment)) After they draw their dish,
they need to draw the utensil(s)* that they use when they eat this dish. They should draw the
utensils on the side of the dish.
Presentation: When the students are finished, ask them to come up one by one to the front of
the room and share with the class their favourite dish and the name of the utensil(s) they use
to eat this dish. (Example: My favourite dish is spaghetti. I use a fork and spoon to eat it.)
Note: Students should be able to draw simple chopsticks but they may have trouble drawing
the other utensils. You can copy and cut out the utensils in Resource 12 and have students
color and glue the ones they need onto their worksheet.
2. Action/Movement: Review the nursery rhyme with the students. Then tell them that they
are going to change one line of the rhyme – “The cow jumped over the moon.” Have them
think about another way the cow could get over the moon and jot down ideas on the
whiteboard. Have students volunteer to come up and do the action.

Some suggestions for actions:










walked over the moon
swam over the moon
hopped over the moon
flew over the moon
dived over the moon
skipped over the moon
danced over the moon
rowed a boat over the moon
tiptoed over the moon
galloped over the moon
For those students who are capable, they can recite the entire nursery rhyme with the new line
they came up with.
3. Rhythm: Lead the class in clapping out the nursery rhyme. Start off slowly and do it again
more quickly. Once you feel that the class is comfortable, make it more challenging. Have
them sit cross-legged and say the rhyme while doing the actions below:
Hey diddle diddle (clap their hands)
The cat and the fiddle (slap their laps)
The cow jumped over the moon (clap their hands)
The little dog laughed (slap their laps)
To see such sport (clap their hands)
And the dish ran away with the spoon! (slap their laps)
4. Interview Skills (Speaking): Paint a paper plate and after it dries, glue on a plastic spoon.
Review the nursery rhyme and ask the students “Where do you think the dish and spoon are
going?” Write their responses on the board. (Alternatively, you can do this as a class activity
with everyone painting a plate and gluing on a spoon. You can write their responses on an
index card and glue it onto the back of the plate.)
5. Interview Skills (Describing Pictures / Speaking): Talk about how the dog laughs
because of the silly things he sees. Ask them to recall what silly things happened in the
nursery rhyme. Show the students the pictures of children laughing and ask them why the
children in the pictures are laughing. (Resource 13) Ask the students to tell you what makes
them laugh.

Resource 1: Warm-up Games
Name: Animals, Animals Where Are You?
Age: 5 years+.
Minimum number of participants: 6+.
Resources needed: Clear space, pictures of various animals.
Procedure: This is an energetic and chaotic game which is very good for
developing listening skills. Give each child a picture of animal such as a
cat, dog, lion, elephant etc.., (See Teacher Resource 2).There must be
at least two pictures of each animal. The children must move around the
space making the sound of the animal in their picture. They cannot tell
anyone what animal they are. The objective of this game is for the
children to listen carefully to noises and form a group with the same
animals.
Name: If I Could Be An Animal.
Age: 3 years +.
Minimum number of participants: 8+
Resources needed: Clear space
Procedure: Each child in the circle takes it turns to say Hi, My name
is………, and if I could be any animal, I would be a ……….. because ……… The
children should be encouraged to be creative and to come up with
unusual animals. They should also be encouraged to comment on and
respond to the other children’s choices of animals. At the end the
teacher could get the children to imagine they are in the zoo/farm as
their chosen animal and people have come to visit them.
