Sept 11th: Magnetism Objective: SWBAT define magnetism and draw magnetic field lines Do Now: 1. What are negatively charged particles called? Where are they located? 2. What subatomic particles are responsible for magnetic fields? 3. Which side of a magnet is repelled by S? Daily Forecast Do Now (5 min) Magnetic Fields (10 min) Magnetic field lines (15 min) Exit Ticket (10 min) Magnets All magnets have two poles. North South Opposite charges attract Like charges repel Activity Draw what you see in your notebook. Show the magnet and the iron shavings. Why does the iron align in this particular way? Magnetic Field Magnetic Field An area around a magnet or electric current Generated when electrons move through space due to a magnetic material or Magnetic Field Can you see the magnetic field around your magnet? Draw what your field looks like in your notebook. Magnetic Field Lines Magnetic Field Now, try your experiment again, but this time draw your magnetic field lines on your sketch in your notebook. Magnetic Field Repel: This time, try holding the two N sides of your magnets together underneath the metal shavings. Sketch what you see. Draw the magnetic field lines. Magnetic Field Attract: This time, try hold the N side of one magnet to the S side of another. WITHOUT touching each other. Sketch what you see. Draw your magnetic field lines. Let’s See How We Did! LOOK AT YOUR SKETCHES, AND COMPARE THEM TO THE PICTURES ON THE SLIDE Attraction Repulsion Exit Ticket 1. 2. 3. 4. Which will attract a N pole? Which subatomic particles cause magnetism? Draw the magnetic field lines on a bar magnet that show attraction. The earth acts similar to a large magnet with a N and S pole. Draw the magnetic field lines of the earth. Exit Ticket 1. 2. 3. 4.
