DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

ISI
WEB

SCIENCE
AND
ISI
WEB
OF
It has been over three years since the University of Malaya implemented the requirement for
academics to publish in ISI Web of Science journals. Still, the confusion over ISI Web of
Knowledge and ISI Web of Science has not cleared completely. The University of Malaya’s
requirement is only based on journal articles published and cited in ISI WEB OF SCIENCE.
So, what then is ISI Web of Knowledge?
Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge is a research platform that gives you access to objective
content and powerful tools to search, track, measure and collaborate in the sciences, social
sciences, arts, and humanities. Journal articles, patents, websites, conference proceedings,
Open Access material — all can be accessed through one interface, using a variety of powerful
search and analysis tools. In the 80’s, the print titles were known as the Science Citation
Indexes and Social Sciences & Humanities Citation Indexes. For those who can remember
these titles, they were heavy voluminous works with commendable value and information.
The Web of Knowledge now encompasses the following:
Biological Abstracts
CABI
Essential Science
Indicators
Journal Citation
Reports
BIOSIS Citation Index
Chinese Science Citation
Database
Food Science and
Technology Abstracts
Medline
BIOSIS Previews

WEB OF SCIENCE
Web of Science is found within the Web of Knowledge platform. This resource offers access
to journal articles in the sciences, social sciences and arts & humanities. Web of Science
contains over 100 years of valuable research, fully indexed and cross-searchable. 92% of the
top universities in the world have all three science, social science, and arts & humanities
editions. University of Malaya subscribes to all three. While almost all publications in the Web
of Knowledge are considered scholarly, it must be reiterated that University of Malaya ONLY
takes into consideration publications in the Web of Science.
This also means that publications in the other databases within Web of Knowledge such as
Zoological Records, Biological Abstracts, etc, are not considered as ISI papers.
