BREAKING is open to all ranks ages 13 and older. There will be one hand and one power foot break. All Color Belts
and Black Belts under age 16 will be breaking wood with hands and feet. Black Belts age 16 and over will break wood
with their feet and cement tiles with their hand. All hand breaks will be on the floor on cinderblocks. After the holder
has been set, you will be allowed 30 seconds to complete your break. Only one attempt will be allowed. No measuring
will be allowed/no practice/no touch. Any measure will be considered your break. The breaker does not need to
start and finish in an L stance with a guarding block. All broken boards will be 1 point per board even if they require
shaking to complete the break. ½ a point will be awarded for a cracked board or if the board breaks from light finger
pressure from a judge. 1 extra point will be awarded for a clean break. Clean break is defined as one that does not
require light finger pressure or shaking from a judge. The competitor’s score will be a combination of both their hand
and foot break scores. Legal hand techniques: Downward (knife hand, reverse knife hand, back fist, or punch). Legal
foot techniques: Front snap kick, turning kick, or side piercing (Standing kicks only).
Blindfolded Patterns must be one of the 24 Ch’ang Hon (Blue Cottage) patterns. Color belt patterns will be performed
individually and scored by the Judging Panel, using scorecards. In case of a tie, the competitors will perform patterns
head-to-head and be scored with flags. Black belt patterns competitors will perform head-to-head, with one
mandatory pattern chosen by the judges and one pattern of their choice. Black belts must be able to perform all of
the patterns up to one rank below their current rank for the mandatory part of the round. All patterns will be
performed while wearing a blindfold.
Sparring competition will consist of two-minute, continuous rounds. Matches are not stopped to award points. Rings
will be run using YCTA rules and regulations. Headgear and mouth guards are mandatory at all levels, in addition to
gloves and footgear, plus groin protection for male competitors. For all rings, one foot completely out of bounds will
be considered out of bounds. Sweeps are not allowed. Hand wraps are not allowed.
Hosin-sul (self defense demonstration) competitors will pre-select a demonstration partner, who will attack only.
Competitors will be judged in pairs and perform defenses against two attacks selected by the Judging Panel, one attack
at a time, appropriate to the competitor’s rank. Mats will be provided, and protective gear may be worn by both the
attacker and defender. See hosin-sul document for more details.
Grand Champion Awards will be presented at the close of competition, based on total points earned. There will be
one male and one female grand champion awarded for both adults and juniors. In order to be eligible for Grand
Champion, the competitor must compete in Breaking, Patterns, Sparring, and Hosin-sul, and may not have been
disqualified from any event. Each gold medal will count as 3 points; each silver medal will count as 2 points, and each
bronze medal will count as 1 point toward Grand Champion. The medal points will then be multiplied by the number
of rounds it took to earn the medal in that division and then added to the individual’s total. The competitor with the
most points wins.
