NUTRITION PROJECT
Purpose:
To gain understanding about how your diet and level of exercise influences the
way your body functions properly.
RECORD YOUR FOOD INTAKE AND EXERCISE FOR ONE FULL DAY. THEN…
Assignment #1:
Using My Pyramid Tracker, input the food you ate during the day. You must fill in
the type of food and your serving size for every meal, drink, and snack that you
consumed.






Log in to http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/
Scroll to the bottom and click “New User Registration”
Create an account
Fill in personal information
Click “Proceed to Food Intake”
Follow the directions on the page :
o Enter a choice of food in the text box, then click "Search." To choose a food, click on
it from the list. Repeat until you have included all foods and beverages eaten in the
last 24 hours




Then click “Select Quantity”
Fill in the chart for both “Serving Size” and “Number of Serving.”
o Screen shot or save as a .PDF
Click “Save and Analyze”
Calculate “DG Comparison” & “Nutrient Intakes”
o Screen shot or save both as .PDF files
In one document labeled “Your Name’s Nutrition Assignment,” compile all
the orange files and complete the following assignment:
Using the data from your “Nutrient Intakes” analysis, pick the 2 vitamins or
minerals that were the MOST deficient.
Write a paragraph for EACH explaining:
 The function of that vitamin or mineral inside the body
 Why that function is important
 How you can incorporate that vitamin or mineral into your diet?
Assignment #2
For the same day, record the amount of exercise you participated in for the day.
Include all forms of exercise (walking to car/bus, walking between classes, work
outs etc).

Click “Physical Activity Entry”



Choose the “Standard Option”
Pick the Activity Type and add it to your list
Follow the directions on the page
o



Continue adding activities until the list contains all activities performed on the
date shown above. Click an item to remove it from your list. Press Select Duration
when you are done.

Calculate “Energy Balance Summary”

In another document labeled “ Your Name’s Energy Balance Assignment,”
compile all the orange files and answer the following questions:
1. In your own words, why is energy balance important? (feel free to use the
resources on the website)
2. Is your energy balanced?
3. How can you improve your energy balance?
