VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY - FEBRUARY 2014 The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for February 2014. Key Points: The February 2014 market of 86,818 new vehicle sales is a decrease of 3,400 vehicle sales or -3.8% on February 2013 (90,218 vehicle sales). February 2014 had the same amount of selling days (24) as February 2013, resulting in a decrease of 141.6 vehicle sales per day. The February 2014 industry volume is up 3,933 or 5.3% on January 2014 (82,285 vehicles). In seasonally adjusted terms the February monthly volume equates to a 0.6% increase versus January. The Passenger Vehicle Market is up by 313 vehicle sales (0.7%) over the same month last year. The Sports Utility Market is down by 967 vehicle sales (-3.6%). The Light Commercial Market is down by 2,567 vehicle sales (-14.5%), and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is down by 179 vehicle sales (-7.5%) versus February 2013. Toyota was market leader in February, followed by Mazda and Holden. Toyota leads Mazda with a margin of 7,029 vehicle sales, or 8.1 market share points. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 1.112 million vehicles. There was the same number of selling days available as in February 2013, however the daily selling rate has decreased by 142 vehicles per day. The Passenger Market at 85,277 vehicles is down by 18 vehicle sales (0.0%). This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.546 million vehicles. Mixed results by segment were evident with the Light car segment, down 3,324 (-17.2%); the Sports car segment, down 252 (-5.7%); the Micro car segment, down 764 (-18.9%); the Upper Large segment, down 84 (-12.4%); and the Medium car segment down 170 (1.6%). Showing gains were the Small car segment, up 3,345 (8.7%); the Large car segment, up 758 (11.0%) and the People Movers segment, 473 (-37.2%), failing to achieve the 2013 volume levels. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market at 51,735 vehicles is running behind the same period in 2013 by 1,722 vehicles (-3.2%), in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.339 million vehicles. The one segment contributing positive results was the SUV Small segment, up 886 vehicle sales (7.8%). Showing negative results were the SUV Large down 1,243 (-6.0%); the SUV Medium segment, down 927 vehicle sales (-4.8; and the SUV Upper Large segment, down 438 vehicle sales (-18.8%). The Light Commercial Market at 28,081 vehicles is running 4,499 vehicles (-13.8%) below the same period in 2013, in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.196 million vehicles. This loss was driven by the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4x4 segment which is down 3,811 vehicle sales (-17.2), and the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment, down 429 vehicle sales (-6.0%); the Vans/CC <=2.5t down 25 vehicle sales (-5.4%); the Light Bus <20 seats segment, down 141 vehicle sales (-36.5%); the Van/CC 2.5-3.5t segment, down 86 vehicle sales (-3.7%) and the Light Bus => 20 seats segment, down 7 vehicle sales (-6.1%). The Heavy Truck Market at 4,010 vehicles is down on the same period in 2013 by 306 vehicle sales or 7.1%. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.032 Million vehicle sales. MONTHLY RESULTS The Passenger Vehicle Market is up 313 vehicle sales or 0.7%. This was driven by gains in the Small car segment, up 1,010 (5.2%); the Large car segment, up 609 (17.4%); the People Movers segment up 272 vehicle sales (41%); and the Medium car segment up 174 vehicle sales (3.1%). All other segments contributed negatively with the Light car segment, down 1,148 (-12.5%); the Sports car segment, down 15 (-0.7%); the Micro car segment, down 456 (-20.2%); and the Upper Large car segment, down 133 (-32.2%) on 2013 volume levels. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market is down 967 vehicle sales or -3.6% versus February 2013. With the exception of the SUV Upper Large segment, up 29 (2.9%), all segments returned negative results with the SUV Small down 35 (-0.6%); SUV Large segment, down 423 vehicle sales (-4.2%) and the SUV Medium segment, down 538 vehicle sales (-5.5%), versus 2013 volume levels. The Light Commercial Market is down 2,567 vehicle sales or -14.5% versus February 2013. All segments returned negative results beginning with the Pick-up/CC 4x4 down 2,259 (-18.7%); the Pick-up/CC 4x2 down 136 (-3.6%); the Light Buses <20 seats segment, down 126 vehicle sales (-55.3%); the Van/CC 2.5t-3.5t segment, down 36 vehicle sales (-2.8%); the Vans/CC <=2.5t segment, down 1 vehicle sale (-0.4%) and the Light Buses =>20 seats segment, down 9 vehicle sales (-15.5%), versus 2013 volume levels. The Heavy Truck Market is down 179 vehicle sales or -7.5%, when compared with the same month in 2013. TOP TEN MAKES Toyota retains the top sales position in the February monthly market with 16,200 vehicle sales, ahead of Mazda with 9,171 and Holden third with 8,697. Toyota, with a market share of 17.6%, holds market leadership in year to date terms. Mazda’s February result sees it in second position with a market share of 11.0%, with Holden's market share of 10.4% placing it third. Hyundai, with a market share of 8.8%, is in fourth position. Ford is in fifth position with share of 7.7%, ahead of Mitsubishi with 5.2% market share in year to date terms.
