To be eligible, you must: be a high school senior for the calendar year 2015-2016 and graduating from a Ventura County high school (public or private) and be planning to attend a two or four-year college, university, or trade school in fall 2016 and either be of Japanese ancestry, or a member of JACL. Please understand that there is a different application for the national JACL scholarship, as eligibility requirements are different for that scholarship program. Japanese Culture and JACL Involvement The JACL was founded in 1929 and is the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights organization. Although originally founded to aid newly arrived Japanese immigrants and their families, the JACL has worked to effect positive social change for all, regardless of ethnicity. The Vision statement of the JACL reads: Aware of our responsibilities of the oldest and largest Asian Pacific American civil rights organization, JACL strives to promote a world that honors diversity by respecting values of fairness, equality, and social justice. The Mission statement of the JACL reads: The Japanese American Citizens League is a national organization whose ongoing mission is to secure and maintain the civil rights of Japanese Americans and all others who are victimized by injustice and bigotry. The leaders and members of the JACL also work to promote cultural, educational, and social values and preserve the heritage and legacy of the Japanese American community.
