2015 U of Tokyo, NTU and UIUC joint summer program -------Understanding Japan and Taiwan in Global Settings 1. Course introduction This summer program is specifically designed for students from University of Tokyo (UT), National Taiwan University (NTU) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) for summer exchange of 2015. Each university will nominate 8 students to participant this program. The duration of this program is from August 1 to 22. All participants from Japan, USA and Taiwan will join the first session of program in Tokyo from 1st August to 11th August. Then the whole group will leave for Taiwan to continue the following courses to be offered in Taipei from 12nd August to 22nd August. It is a cross-cultural comparative study program, based on learning and exchanging idea of political economic, social, and civil society from Asia-Pacific view. The students will have chance to get closer discussion with distinguished professors. 2. Course design (TBD soon) : *Politics and International Relation Democracy and Election in Taiwan Taiwan-Japan Bilateral Strategic Relation Security and Cross-strait relation between Taiwan and China Economics and International Development of Japan and Taiwan *Taiwan Businessmen and Global Development East Asian Economic Integration: Issues and Challenges *Social Change and young generation NGO / NPO in Taiwan and Middle Classes in Asia Young generation attitudes toward Asia future Culture and Civil Society 3. Field trips / filed work : *Students will be grouped into 4 -6 groups in working on field research : (1) Community - based field study: Localization, exploration and data-collection (2) Policy - making field study: Visiting, discussing and exchanging with policy makers / legislators (3) Civil - society field study: Exploring, sharing and exchanging with NGOs / leaders. (4) Social / political advocate field study: Social movement learning with specific social / cultural / political leaders ( including campus student movement ) or groups (5) Others (open to discussion) 4. Course Credit UT ,UIUC and NTU will be in charge of credit management separately. Students from NTU might be able to gain 3 units after completing the whole summer program. 5. Housing Students from NTU and UIUC, when they participate in program to be held in NTU, their housing is provided at Hotel Kizankan ( http://kizankan.co.jp/english/) including breakfast. Students from U of Tokyo and UIUC, when they participate in program to be held in NTU, their housing is reserved at Howard Civil Service International House (http://intl-house.howard-hotels.com/) with single rooms in a residential complex equipped with sports facilities and spacious common areas, including breakfast. 7. Admissions Criteria (1) Applicants All of the undergraduate, master, and Ph.D. students are welcomed t apply. Each partner will be in charge of recruiting of participants. For instance, NTU will nominate 11 students to join this summer program. (2) Application Dates We will start to call for participants from now on. All the participants will be decided by June. UT side will offer necessary information about participating students to NTU's College of Social Sciences. (3) Language Proficiency Toelf_iBT 79 IELTS 6.5 (4) Application Documents a. Notification of acceptance: July 10 8. Fee The attendance to NTU round will be free because the program fee will be supported by 勇源 Foundation。For join U of Tokyo round, the program fee is exempted as well but the students need to pay for hotel fee (about 100,000 yen).
