Common Core Aligned Lesson Plan Subject: Geometry Unit: Deductive Reasoning, Logic, and Proof Week: 3 Teacher: Mr. Ives LESSON ELEMENT: Logic and Truth Tables (Note: This day is sometimes a holiday) Common Core Learning Standards Addressed: Grade: 10-11 Day: 1 Rocinante High School STUDENT-FRIENDLY TRANSLATION G-CO.09 (Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include: vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a perpendicular bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the segment’s endpoints.) Learning Goals and Objectives: (What will students know & be able to do as a result of this lesson?) The student will be able to state the truth values for compound statements including conjunctions and disjunctions. I can find the truth of a compound statement. Vocabulary Support: (What vocabulary will student need for this lesson?) statement, truth value, negation, compound statements, conjunction, disjunction, and truth table. I understand what a compound statement is and what conjuctions and disjunctions are. Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: (What does success on this lesson’s outcomes look like?) The student will be able to evaluate the truth value for a given conjunction and disjunction. I will find truth values for logic statements. Activities/Tasks: (What learning experiences will students engage in?) Slide show on microchip design and printed logic circuits. presentation of binary number systems explanation of digital technology guided / independent practice with real-time assessment six-step vocabulary graphic organizer student self assessment Resources/Materials: (What texts, digital resources, & materials will be used in this lesson?) Does this lesson reflect one of the Common Core shifts in instruction (See: Common Core Shifts EngageNY.org) In addition, please choose ONE question below to respond to after you have taught the lesson OR create your own question and respond to it after you have taught the lesson. 1. How did this lesson support 21st Century Skills? 2. How did this lesson reflect academic rigor? 3. How did this lesson cognitively engage students? 4. How did this lesson engage students in cooperative learning and cooperative learning skills? 5. How effective was the work in this lesson? Common Core Aligned Lesson: Reflection + Digital presentation with binary numbers and an explanation of how a CD and DVD player converts sound and images to binary was very engaging. - A lot to cram into one lesson, especially with the vocabulary. ∆ Maybe I should do just one vocabulary word?
