UCF Marriage & Family Research Institute
The Marriage and Family Research Institute at the University of Central Florida (UCF MFRI)
was created in 2003 to facilitate the development of research and clinical initiatives to better support
couples, marriages, and families. The Institute conducts original research and facilitates and supports
scholarly activity of faculty and graduate students interested in marriage, family, and child issues.
Additionally, the Institute can provide outcome and process evaluation services for other research
projects part of and independent of the Institute.
UCF MFRI Internship
The Internship Program at the UCF MFRI is a two-semester commitment that provides two
unique opportunities for graduate students:
Project TOGETHER. The UCF Marriage and Family Research Institute is currently engaged in
a three-year research grant funded by the Office of Family Assistance of the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Service, Project TOGETHER (To Offer Great Education That Harvests Enduring
Relationships). Project TOGETHER provides relationship education and Family Support Services low- to
moderate-income couples and individuals in Central Florida. Couples complete a detailed clinical intake
process and are then assigned to participant in a relationship education workshop, as well as work with a
Family Service Counselor. Participants receive either 12 or 30 hours of relationship education using the
and booster sessions. Clinical interns may spend 15 hours per week assisting intakes, providing support to
relationship education workshops, and other client related project activities.
Couples and Individual Counseling. The UCF Marriage and Family Research Institute provides
marital, couples, and individual counseling referred from key referral partners in the community. Students
will participate in the following activities in addition to providing clinical services for 15 hours per week:



Be responsible for recruiting some of their caseload by their second semester of internship;
Participate in two workshops provided by the UCF Small Business Development Center
(http:// www.bus.ucf.edu/sbdc/) or UCF Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation
(http://www.cei.ucf.edu/ index.html) each semester;
Attend either Central Florida Association for Marriage and Family Therapists or Central


Florida Mental Health Counselors Association’s monthly meetings for networking and
professional development;
Participate in monthly private practice coaching and supervision (optional); and
Develop a comprehensive business plan for their future private practice (optional).
Preferred Candidate. While the UCF MFRI encourages any student eligible for internship to
apply for an intern counselor position, preferred candidates will:




Be enrolled and in good academic standing in the Master’s of Counselor Education program,
Marriage and Family Therapy Track, at the University of Central Florida
Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
By the semester they begin internship will have completed all three courses of: (a) Couples,
(b) Family I, and (c) Family II (c.f. Section 2 of application)
Be available a minimum of three weekday evenings to counsel clients (c.f. Section 2 of
application)
