Good Morning ma’am!
Our lesson for today is all about sonnet and
its types.
So first of all, what do we mean by a sonnet?
Anyone?
A sonnet is an example of Lyric Poetry
Sonnet is a poem consisting of 14 lines with
iambic pentameter. Classified into 2 types
namely the Shakespearean and Petrarchan
sonnet.
The first one is the Shakespearean sonnet or
English sonnet which is composed of 3
quatrains and 2 clinching couplets. And the
pattern of this sonnet is like this: abab
The second type of a sonnet is the
Petrarchan sonnet or Italian sonnet
introduced by Francisco Petrarch which is
composed of an octave and a sestet. And the
pattern of this sonnet is like this: abba
Again what is a sonnet?
A sonnet is a poem with 14 lines.
What about the types of a sonnet?
2 types of sonnets are
Shakespearean/English sonnet and
Petrarchan/Italian sonnet.
So let’s go now to one of 154 famous sonnets
of William Shakespeare, the “Sonnet 116”.
Before we proceed to our next lesson, let’s
have a quick brainstorming. What comes
first into your mind when you heard about
the word “LOVE”? Any idea?
Love is blind.
Love is unconditional.
Love is a feeling towards another.
Love is something unpredictable.
Love is happiness.
Our topic for today has something to do
with the word LOVE. Sonnet 116 tackles
about the meaning of love. Here it is:
“Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken
It is a star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his
height be shaken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and
cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come:
Love alters with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon be proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.”
Discuss the meaning of the first 4 lines
Discuss the meaning of 5-9 lines
Discuss the meaning of 10-14 lines
Love is smiling when you hear that person's
voice.
Love is the butterflies in your tummy no
matter how many times you see that person.
Love is when you look at them and smile for
no reason.
Love is seeing an imperfect person perfectly.
Love is painful.
Love is hard.
Love is sacrifice.
Love is sadness.
(wahahaha yung ibang meaning ginawa ko
lang yung iba ni-copy ko lang sa story na
SDTG wahahah bahala kayo magbigay ng
meaning for this lesson. PS: yung part na ito
ay para lang sa magrereport nito okie?:)
kapag nag copy ng lang meaning about
love, site the owner of it okie ))
IV. Generalization (bahala ka na mag-generalize for the whole topic )
V. Application
From the Sonnet 39 of Shakespeare, what is the meaning of this passage: “When in
disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes, I all alone beweep my outcast state” (bahala
ka na kung anong sonnet ang kukunin mo basta kunin mo lang yung 2 lines tas
dapat alam mo yung interpretation nun  then palitan mo nalang yung sonnet na
nakalagay dyan sa taas. PS: para lang toh sa magrereport ng part na ito okie?)
VI. Evaluation
(bahala ka na, wala na kong maisip ehh xDD )
VII. Assignment
Memorize Elizabeth Barreth Browning’s “Sonnet to the Portugese” and be ready
for a recitation tomorrow.
