The Kite Runner

Using the journal you kept while reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, you will write an
essay in class that supports the following thesis statement:
In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the characters Amir, Hassan and Baba make choices
that affect not only their own lives and destiny, but the destiny and the lives of others.
Your essay will be five paragraphs in length. You will have an introduction, three body
paragraphs of support (one devoted to each of the three characters), and a conclusion.

Your introduction should contain the title and author’s name as well as the thesis
statement. It should preview what you will discuss and prove within the body of your
essay.

Each body paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence and contain specific
examples from the text as well as one quote per body paragraph for support. Each
quote should be followed by an interpretation of how it supports your point. The page
number where you found the quote should follow the quote in parenthesis. Be sure to
sum up the main point of your paragraph with a concluding sentence.

The conclusion should be a summary of the points you have proven in your body
paragraphs. There should never be NEW information in the conclusion.

Write in third person. Do not use 1st or 2nd person (I, you, me, we, us).

Do not use contractions or slang terms in formal writing.

No value judgments. For example, Hosseini is a gifted writer or The book was very
interesting.

Double space, using 12 point font with MLA Heading (your name, my name, English I,
date).

Use proper grammar and spelling. Transition between ideas. Be sure there is
subject/verb agreement. Write about fiction in the present tense.
