Mike Stirling Transitions Professor Earner 10/15/09 Sex Signals Last week I attended the sex signals presentation in McGuire Hall. The presentation consisted of informative information on sex and what not to do. They went into detail about date rape, and people being aware of what happens when you mix alcohol with sex. The purpose of the presentation was to educate young adults about sex and that the decisions you make can impact your life. Many women will give men mixed signals about sex. Another issue addressed was the stereotypes of men and women; this gives men a bad rap and misconstrues reality. First the presentation gave us situations in which were wrong. A woman would give a man mixed signals and the man would be trying way to hard. The man in some cases would even go to far and basically sexually harass the woman. People need to know ask before they act, this is a common theme in the sex signals presentation. Before having sex a man needs to ask his partner if it is ok, this will insure the consentuality of the act. Despite the question asking might be awkward it stands as the standard to following the new protocol of the safe way to have sex. When you ask your partner there is no confusion and you will be better off in the long run. Another issue presented in the sex signals presentation was the stereotypical views of men and women. The stereotypical man loves his meat, loves to drink beer, and is always looking for sex at any cost. The man is essentially an animal looking for women to prey on. On the other hand the woman is portrayed as a very mannered cultured figure in society. But unfortunately these are not realities in today’s society. Men don’t just go looking for girls to have sex with, and girls aren’t perfect. People need to stray from the stereotypes and learn to not judge a book by its cover. A big theme and the title of the presentation is sex signals. This opens a broad topic of sex and issues that come with it. One issue of sex signals is date rape. We learn that this is occurring more and more in today’s society. In most cases the man doesn’t even consider what he did rape, he was given wrong signals. The truth of the matter is that one partner assumed something the other partner did not and that’s where the problem lies. We saw in the presentation of a guy who goes to a girls dorm to study and ends up getting accused of rape. The bottom line and the moral to the story is when a girl says no it means no. Sex signals was very informative and I learned a lot. You need presentations like these to remind you that situations can arise and you need to be informed on how to handle them. I’m glad I got to enjoy such a well prepared presentation.
