Lee chased to Appomattox by Ulysses S. Grant •Lee arrives in Appomattox County on April 8th, 1865 •Lee and his men try to escape using the Southern Side Railroad •Lee’s forces are cut off by the armies of Ulysses S. Grant The South’s Last Stand •Lee’s instructs his Soldiers to wait and make their last stand •Lee at first ambushed the Northern Calvary and forces retreat •Union infantry reinforcements come and circle Lee’s armies •Confederates fall back and surrender shortly after Appomattox Battlefield Southern Surrender •On the morning of April 9th the final battle is fought •In the afternoon of April 9th Robert E.
