Tentative Syllabus for English 1302 (morning) West - Spring 2014 General Information: This course is designed to cover the four major genres of literature and to integrate the reading of literature with critical thinking and writing. Required textbook: Literature Craft and Voice, 2nd edition by Nicholas Delbanco and Alan Cheuse Required novel: The Awakening by Kate Chopin (novel will be needed by end of March) Testing and Writing Assignments: There will be one major test over each genre studied. Four interpretative papers will be assigned, one for each genre, and one will require research and be a full blown research paper. Other in class and homework writing assignment are also required and will add together to equal a total final grade. All papers are expected to be typed in MLA format and must be at least 2 pages in length. Overall interpretative skills will be the emphasis with competence in writing as taught in 1301. Late papers and/ or assignments will receive a deduction of 10 points. Scoring breakdown: 50% test, 40% papers, 10% in class/homework assignments Attendance policy: Please call if there is some emergency and you will not be in attendance. You will be dropped if you miss more than 3 class meetings or if you miss 2 class meetings in a row. An absence on the day of a test will result in the deduction of 20 points from the overall test grade as attendance on these dates is vitally important and no weak excuse is acceptable. To avoid this deduction, the student must produce acceptable documentation of an emergency or other extenuating circumstances on the date of the test. The last day to drop with a W is April 6th.
