Literary terms week 10: Go over these and assign imagiwords due Thursday; quiz Friday.
Finish “The Open Boat” and have students work with a partner to create a “Naturalist” passage of their own. Share
these with the whole class.
Introduce women’s issues of the turn of the 20th Century: Show images from online source.
Introduce author Kate Chopin and read “The Story of an Hour,” focusing on the main character’s portrayal in the role
of “wife.” Whole class discussion.

go over with the whole class.
Continue our study of Kate Chopin with the short story “Desiree’s Baby.” Have students complete the study
questions that go along with this story. Whole class discussion follows.
If time allows, introduce Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Discuss such controversial elements
such as “the rest cure,” often prescribed by doctors at the time, as well as the overuse of morphine in the South,
especially, for women ailments.
