FACILITATORS: Ms. Burnham Ms. Schoengarth Mr. Austin COURSE INFORMATION: Language Arts/Social Sciences – Self-paced classes 5 Semester Credit Hours MATERIALS: (1) small spiral bound notebook COURSE DESCRIPTION: Apex Learning offers a comprehensive digital curriculum to meet high school graduation requirements in math, science, English, social studies, world languages, and selected electives. The curriculum is designed to support academic success for all students, from those not prepared for grade-level academic challenges to those capable of accelerating their learning. Apex Learning has designed its digital curriculum with multiple course pathways, each designed to meet specific needs of students as they transition from middle school to high school and progress toward graduation. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Provide focused instruction using varied teaching strategies such as guided-inquiry and direct instruction; engage students in practice and application exercise that clarify and deepen conceptual understanding and mastery of skill; assess student progress throughout the instructional phase with formative assessments that provide feedback to both students and teachers; remediate where necessary; and provide summative assessment . LAB RULES & POINTERS: 1. Remain in your assigned seat unless directed otherwise. 2. No food or drink. All bottles and food must be out of sight and put away. 3. No i-pods, cell phones or other electronic devices allowed. If you are using an electronic device during class, you will be asked to turn it in. Please do so without any negative issues or argument. 4. Stay on Apex. Do not go to other websites unless told otherwise. 5. Clean up your area before you leave. 6. Please make sure you bring all materials with you (i.e., study guides, key terms, notes). You have the option of leaving your coursework in your individual folder. After class has concluded, please place your folder in the tray located on the side of the filing cabinet in the back of the room. CLASS PARTICIPATION: 1. You are in the lab to work, not socialize. 2. There will be no socializing and off task behavior during class time. 3. Please respect the needs of others when it comes to working. When you are off task and Disruptive, it is a distraction to others in your work area. 4. You must complete your daily entrance and exit ticket. GRADING: 1. Entrance/Exit slips are a way for students to write and provide information about class, or the topic under discussion, or a specific teaching strategy/material being used. Please pick-up an entrance slip prior to the start of class. Your entrance slip must be done in the first few minutes at the beginning of class. In contrast, your exit slip mist be completed during the last few minutes of the bell work. Why use exit slips? They provide the teacher with an informal measure of how well students have understood a topic or lesson. They help students reflect on what they have learned. They allow students to express what or how they are thinking about new information. They teach students to think critically. Below is the rubric that will be used to evaluate your entrance/entry ticket. 1 2. 2 3 Entrance/Exit slip is blank or is impossible to understand Entrance/Exit slip is difficult to read or understand Entrance/Exit slip is organized and easy to understand Student makes no effort to answer the question, Simply writes “I don’t know.” Entrance/Exit slip makes very little attempt to answer the questions that were asked. Student has made a serious attempt to answer the question posed by the teacher. No effort has gone into entrance/exit slip. Minimal effort has gone into entrance/exit slip. Evident that effort has gone into entrance/exit slip. Test out procedure The test out procedure allows you to take the semester final for the course as a pre-test. If you pass the final exam with 80% or better, you have tested out of the class and will be given credit for the class. 3. If you pass the final with a score between 70% to 79%, you will be given assignments from Apex based on the percentage difference and what the final exam summary indicates that you will need. For example, if you take the final and earn 75%, essentially you will only have to earn 5% more to get to the mastery level of 80%. A Personal Education Plan will reflect the proper assignments you need to complete. 4. Study guides must be 100% complete and correct. 5. You must score an 80% on quizzes to receive credit. 6. All grades will be recorded as a “B” or “A”.
