ETE Weekly Bulletin
This newsletter is meant to give you the latest information about your ETE colloquium, academics on campus,
professional development opportunities, and other news and upcoming events of interest. At a minimum, you are
REQUIRED to read the ETE Colloquium Information every week – this area will often contain information that
could affect your course grade. The rest of the bulletin is optional (but hopefully helpful) reading material.
If you have any questions about the content of the bulletin, please look at BOTH the Canvas ETE colloquium
website AND the ETE organization website, THEN contact your instructor if you cannot find the answer you need.

Early Warning Grades? What Now?
You may have just seen your Early Warning Grades. If not, visit https://my.umd.edu and have a look. If what you
see has you concerned, do one of the four following things. Now.
1. Spend 5 minutes with http://scholars.umd.edu/current/academic-resources and have a look at the many
ways (some right here in the community) you can enhance your academic strategies.
2. Visit Learning Assistance Services at http://counseling.umd.edu/LAS/, where you can find help with study
skills, particular courses, time management, and other pressures on your academic work.
3. Check in with your advisor. If you’re not sure who that is:

4. Talk to your Scholars program director and staff and your Peer Mentors. They’re here to support you.
Take a deep breath. This is week 8, not week 14. This is, for many of you, your first semester, not your eighth.
There’s time.

ENSP graduate Justine Beaulieu (ENSP/Environment & Agriculture, 2007)
Seeking an unpaid undergraduate research assistant.
Do you love the University of Maryland? Do you want to get paid to tell people how great it is over the
phone? At the Tell-a-Terp Call Center, students work in conjunction with top Maryland officials to raise
community support and private funding for our great university. Student employees take advantage of
flexible work hours, gain professional experience, and have an amazing time on the job. If you are interested
in working at Tell-a-Terp and committed to helping UMD become the greatest school in the world, fill out an
online application (click link above)
The Department of Entomology at the University of Maryland is looking to hire an undergraduate general
office assistant to work 12-15 hours per week. Responsibilities include sorting departmental mail, answering
phones, checking-in deliveries, scheduling advising appointments, helping with our weekly colloquium, and
other general office tasks. Some tasks may involve light lifting. The office assistant will also have duties in
coordinating departmental conferences. Send resume and cover letter to Nadira Ramnarain
at nadirar@umd.edu.
The intern would have opportunities to get a lot of experience doing molecular work, field work, greenhouse
work, etc; and it’s possible that the unpaid job could become paid in the future. This would be a great
experience for someone who wants to see what research is like; and to network with a like-minded ENSP
alumna. If interested, please send a short statement of interest and a copy of your resume to Justine
Beaulieu, jbeauli@gmail.com.

Sustainability Tip of the Week
October is Fair Trade Month and a good time to think about the hard-working people who produce the foods we eat
and the fabrics we wear. Fair Trade is trade in which producers are justly and fairly compensated for their
products. It is a system that respects producers, communities and the environment. Common Fair Trade products
found on campus are coffee, tea and chocolate. Look for Fair Trade certification on the products you buy or try a
new-to-you Fair Trade product during October.
