University of Maryland School of Nursing Designated Areas:
Social Science Electives: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Women’s Studies, additional
Psychology, or Sociology courses.
Humanities Electives; Theory courses taken from at least two different departments – Art, Music, Theatre, Dance, Communications, Philosophy,
Literature, Religion (if completed at a non-religiously affiliated school), Language, Speech, Math, Women’s Studies.
General Electives: Any additional courses, academic in nature, that are not below the 100 level – English as a Second Language, Internship, and
College Orientation courses are not accepted.
Important Academic Policies:
1. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate scores accepted by University of
Maryland College Park will be accepted by the University of Maryland School of Nursing to
fulfill requirements.
2. Students may take up to 8 credits (of the 59 required) at another College/University other than
University of Maryland College Park to fulfill pre-requisites. However, only 4 of those credits
may be in a required science course (Chemistry I, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology I,
and Anatomy and Physiology II). Students must pre-approve courses taken outside of
University of Maryland College Park with the Nursing Advisor.
3. Courses may not count for more than one category.
4. BSCI 105 (General Biology I) is a pre-requisite for BSCI 201, BSCI 202, and BSCI 223 and
must be completed prior to enrollment in the upper level biology classes.
5. Students must be calculus eligible (meaning placed into MATH 220 or higher) in order to take
CHEM 131/132 (General Chemistry I) and BSCI 105 (General Biology I). If a student places
into a lower Math, they must successful complete that course before they enroll in General
Biology I or General Chemistry I.
6. The following classes may not be used to fulfill the seven (7) General Elective credits; English
as a Second Language, internship, and college orientation courses. Please note that this list is
not exhaustive and it is important you consult with your Nursing Advisor.
