Second Grade Orientation School Schedule • School Day 7:30-2:40 • Tardy bell is at 7:40 • Dismissal is at 2:40 • Changes in after school transportation must be in writing. • Please let the office know of the change before 2pm if possible. Morning Routines • This year, if you want to walk your child to class in the morning you will have to sign in at the office. • Students will be counted tardy if they are not in the class by 7:40 AM, so please plan ahead and allow for plenty of time for the Raptor badge system. Morning Routines Cont. • Students should be dropped off in the back by 7:35 AM. After 7:35 AM you must park and walk your child in. Students should not be dropped off in the bus circle. Afternoon Routines • If your child is a walker and you intend to meet them to walk home, please meet your child across the street from the school. • If you plan to pick-up your child in the back to walk home, please use the sidewalk that runs parallel to Wilderness Oak. Afternoon Routines (Cont.) • If you are car pickup, please display your bright yellow card on the dash of your vehicle. • When parking in the lots, please do not block cars in or parallel park behind cars. • Our streets on campus are two-way. Dismissal • Second Graders dismiss at 2:40 • Please do not check your child out after 2:00. • If you are walking up to pick up your child, you will need to drive to the back of the school to Parent Pick Up. The front of the school is for walkers going across the crosswalk only. Dress Code • Shorts will be permitted provided that the shorts are neatly hemmed, conservative and modest in appearance. • Tanks/sleeveless shirts will be prohibited unless the width of the shirt’s shoulder is at least three (3) fingers wide. • Appropriate footwear is required. Footwear with wheels are prohibited. • Costumes of any type are prohibited. (except on campus approved days. • Any apparel or hairstyles that are considered to be distracting and/or disruptive to the educational environment. (ex. pajamas, house shoes) or are considered a safety concern are prohibited. • Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather so we can go out to recess as the weather permits. Would you like to volunteer? • We LOVE parent volunteers!! • You must be cleared to volunteer in NEISD schools • To be cleared, go online at www.neisd.net/vol/index.html • Toddlers may not be brought with you if you are volunteering due to safety reasons Attendance Things to Remember • Call in absences at 210-407-9200 (can be dialed 24/7.) • Always send in a note from either a parent OR a doctor within 2 days of student’s return. • Emails are not acceptable notes from parents – the office needs a note that is signed by the parent. • No more than 8 parent notes can be coded as and counted towards “Excused Absences.” • Students who leave campus before 9:15 AM or arrive after 9:15 AM without a medical appointment note will be considered as absent the entire school day. Legal Documents • If you have any legal paperwork regarding court orders for your child, please provide a copy to Mrs. Robertson (Assistant Principal) in the front office. • If you have a child returning to our campus from last year, please make the current teacher aware of court orders on file. The Leader in Me! At Wilderness Oak, we are continuing to embrace the Leader In Me program. The idea is to grow great leaders. The students will practice the 7 Habits of Happy Kids and take ownership of their classroom responsibilities to demonstrate their leadership qualities. 7 Habits of Happy Kids The 7 Habits The students will learn about the 7 habits and use them to become great leaders. At the end of the day, students will reflect the positive behavior they displayed (+) and something about their behavior (∆) they would like to change. Go to the Wilderness Oak website Click on the Library link on the right side Click on the Library Resources in the middle of the page Use the list of passwords given by your child’s teacher Counselors • Ms. Hardwick is our grade level counselor. • She is on campus Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday afternoons. • Mrs. Lanford is our full time counselor on campus. Grades for NEISD Numerical grades are as follows: A = 90-100 B =80-89 C =70-79 F = 69 or below • Late work (after 1 week) will have a deduction of 10 points. • Late work will be accepted until the material has been assessed summatively. Re-dos and Corrections • Students will have the opportunity to redo failed classroom daily assignments and quizzes at home for the highest grade of a 70. • Students will have the opportunity to retake tests and assessments in class for the highest grade of a 70. Conduct Grades Alpha grade as follows: E= Excellent S= Satisfactory N= Needs Improvement U= Unsatisfactory • Conduct grades will reflect responsibility, participation, and appropriate behavior. This will include students completing and turning homework in on time each Thursday, and tardiness will also be affecting this grade. Miscellaneous • Review contents in student take-home binder (Reflection, Reading Log, Word Wall, Review/Extras) • Homework– hard copy sent home at the beginning of the month & linked to the second grade webpage. Homework is due every Thursday and will affect student’s conduct grade if not turned in. • You can find our weekly newsletter on our second grade webpage. Please check weekly to keep up to date with things going on in 2nd grade. • 20% Passion Project- An enrichment opportunity for your child to research, create, invent and explore a topic of their choice after they have completed work. This is not for a grade and is not due on a specific date. Miscellaneous • Million Minute Reading Challenge- School wide tracking of reading minutes, please help your child log their minutes daily. • We love for parents to come eat lunch with their child. Please make sure to stop by the office to sign in first, then meet your child at the Parent Table in the cafeteria to eat. Your child may take one friend to join you for lunch if they choose. • Winter & Valentine’s Day parties. • Medications – must have doctor’s note and be given to the nurse. • Snacks- please send a healthy snack each day. • Visitor Sign-In – stop by office first. Greenback Night • Greenback night is our school-wide fundraiser for the year and is a donation to the school. We will not sell cookie dough, wrapping paper, or participate in the Apex Fun Run. • Our goal is to raise $10,000 to update our playgrounds and create a beautiful outdoor space. • There are incremental goals, but if we reach or exceed our final goal of $10,000, the students will banish the principal to the roof for an entire day, and each class will be allowed to “bend” a school rule for the day. • If each family contributes $16 per child, we will reach our goal! • Greenback donations will be happily accepted until October 1, 2015.
