Do Now: Students will set academic and personal resolutions.
 Students will complete resolution cards.
 Students will share resolutions with partners.
 Teacher will select several students to share aloud.
 Resolution/goals will be posted in the room
Objective: Review for midterm exam
 Identify and analyze elements of satire.
 Plan and organize an essay.
Teacher will review the elements and characteristics of satire
 Exaggeration, incongruity, reversal, parody.
 In groups students will practice analyzing satirical images using a graphic organizer.
 Students will share out findings in whole class discussion.
Distribute Copies of “Love Thy PlayStation” if needed (this was included in the review guide)
 Read aloud with students and guide class to identify satirical techniques
 Once techniques have been identified guide students in analyzing the effect on the reader.

Present students with exam essay question, “write a rhetorical analysis identifying and analyzing the
satirical techniques used by the writer. You may use the graphic organizer below to help you plan
your essay.”
Ask : faced with this prompt, how would you begin to draft an essay? What kinds of things belong in your
introduction?
Model: drafting an introduction—remember the purpose of your introduction is to frame your essay,
establish credibility and introduce your argument.
 Students will draft their own introductions then create an outline for the rest of the essay.

Do Now: Read “Budget Mix-up Provides Nation’s Schools with Enough Money to Properly Educate
Students.” Complete organizer identifying satirical techniques.
Objective: Review for midterm exam
 Identify and analyze elements of satire.
 Plan and organize an essay
Review do now by discussion the following questions:
1. What are the underlying assumptions or unwritten attitudes in the piece? What does the writer
believe about his readers or people in general?
2. What foolish flawed or wrong human action or aspect of society is being poked fun at?
3. What would the author’s argument look like stripped of its humor?
4. List 3 examples of satire from the piece and describe their effect on the reader in the chart below.
5. What is the goal of the satirist (what part of society or human action does he want to change)?
6. How effective are the method of the satirist? Use evidence to support your claim.

 Teacher will review the parts of the hero cycle.
 Students will take notes including the corresponding parts of Siddhartha.
Distribute “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin
 Read aloud and discuss character motivations.
 Distribute student model essay
 Read essay aloud and model the beginning of a reverse outline.
 Students will complete reverse outline in pairs
 Discuss the elements of a strong literary analysis
