Sociology Assignments for 2nd Semester – 2014
2/7: Due on Tuesday, 2/11: The Three Things Essay – for those who have
had me before, write “The Three People I Would Most Like to Meet.”
For those who have NOT had me before, write “The Three Things I
Like Best About Myself.” This should be typed and double-spaced.
2/10: Remember that the Three Things Essay is due tomorrow, typed and
double-spaced. Also, cover your text and bring it in for cover-check.
Begin writing up your notes, starting with Important Terms/Concepts.
The other three categories for Ch. 1 include Sociologists, the Theoretical
Approaches and the Sociology of Sport. We will be starting the Terms/
Concepts tomorrow in class.
2/11: We began discussing Terms/Concepts today from Ch. 1. We will continue
tomorrow. We assigned Current Events for Friday, Feb. 21, and those
students are to get their articles approved by Wed., Feb. 19.
2/12: We finished Terms/Concepts today and will begin on Sociologists in Ch. 1
next time we meet. Continue doing your notes.
2/13: No School – Snow

2/17: No School – President’s Day
2/18: We discussed the Approaches and defined them. We began the
Sociologists today. We also assigned the Three Approaches Paper –
a 5-paragraph paper with Intro, describing in general for what the
approaches are used, three body paragraphs – each one defining and
explaining an approach, and finally, a concluding paragraph in which you
identify the approach with which you most align yourself and why.
This paper should be typed and double-spaced. It is due on Monday,
Feb. 24.
Remember: Current Event people – your articles are due tomorrow!
2/19: We have discussed a number of the Sociologists and will finish them
tomorrow. Friday is Current Events and those who are going needed
to have their articles approved by today.
2/20: We finished the Sociologists and went on to Approaches. Your Approaches
paper is due on Monday, Feb. 24. (It should be typed and double-spaced.)
See above for directions. We will have Current Events tomorrow.
2/21: We had Current Events today. Remember that your Approaches paper is

2/24: We reviewed the Three Approaches today, and you turned in your 3
Approaches Paper. We will have our Chapter 1 test on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Wed. will be our in-class review day.
2/25: We finished discussing Ch. 1 today. We will have a review tomorrow for
our test on Thursday, Feb. 27.
2/26: We had our review today for the test on Chapter 1 tomorrow.

3/3: We began a film today: “Waking Ned Divine”. You were given a film sheet
that will not be due until the day after we finish watching the film. Your
Ch. 1 test was returned for your perusal today. Current Event volunteers:
be sure to have your article approved by Wed., March 5. (Presentations
will be on Friday, March 7.)
3/4: We continued viewing the above film.
Current Event volunteers – your articles are due by tomorrow for approval.
3/5: We concluded the film today. The filmsheet will be due tomorrow in class.
We will begin discussion on Ch. 2 tomorrow. Current Event volunteers
should have had their articles approved today.
3/6: Filmsheets were collected today. We also began our discussion on Ch. 2,
breaking into small groups to ponder certain “common-sense” truths.

3/7: We had Current Events today. Keep doing your notes for Ch. 2. Have a

3/10: We got into Chapter 2 a bit today. Current Event volunteers need to
get their articles approved by Wed., March 12.
3/11: We continued our discussion about scientific research in sociology.
Current Event people – be sure to get your articles approved by tomorrow.
You have a reaction paper due on Monday, March 17, on the NYTimes
article about Spain. It should contain an Introduction, 3 points you found
interesting and a Conclusion. Type and double-space.
3/12: We have explored the three approaches to Scientific Sociology.
Current Event articles were due today for approval.
Reaction paper (see above) is due on Monday, March 17, typed and
double-spaced.
3/13: Your reaction paper (see above) is due on Monday, March 17.

3/17: Reaction Paper due today. We picked volunteers for Current Events
this Friday, March 21. We passed out the instructions for the Restaurant
Survey Project today. We explained the project and the class set a due
date of 1 April (Tuesday). We are still discussing your notes on Ch. 2.
3/18: More on the Rest. Survey Project. You should be writing your draft survey
and giving it to me to proofread. Project deadline is 1 April. We are going
over the 4 Methods of Sociological Research in class. Deadline for Current
Events is tomorrow!
3/19: I am proofreading draft surveys. I will Xerox any final copies of surveys as
soon as I get them. Today is the deadline for your articles to be approved
if you are giving a Current Event on Friday.
3/20: Today, we finished going over Surveys from Ch. 2. Then, we demonstrated
graphing, both on the board and on the computer (using Excel – thanks to
Tina ).
Your Discussion Question after viewing the Stanford Country Prison Exp.
slideshow is due tomorrow, typed and double-spaced. Your Survey Project
is due on 1 April.
3/21: Current Events today. We collected the Discussion Questions from the
SCP Exp. slideshow. Have a nice weekend!
3/24: We had a seminar-style class today, discussing the Stanford County Prison
Experiment and the Milgram Experiment. The Restaurant Survey Project is
due on Tuesday, 1 April.
3/25: We finished our discussion of Chapter 2 today and planned for our test on
Friday, March 28. We will be meeting in the lab tomorrow. There will be
time to play with graphing, too!
3/26: We were in the Lab today taking Implicit Association Tests. We also looked
at past Restaurant Survey Projects to get an idea about finished product.
(The Project is due on Tuesday, April 1.)
3/27: We had the Review today for our Chapter 2 Test tomorrow.
3/28: Test on Ch. 2 today. Restaurant Survey Project deadline is Tuesday, 1 April.

to kick off Ch. 9. Read the chapter and take notes.

The Social Foundations of Deviance.
4/8: Chapter 9 topic discussions included Functions of Deviance and Merton’s

4/9: We began our film, School Ties, today. After the film is finished, you will
be responsible for a filmsheet.
4/10: Film continued today. We should finish tomorrow.
4/11: We finished “School Ties” today. The filmsheet should be handed in
by Monday, 4/21. Please type and double-space it.

4/25: We did Current Events today, and also passed out an essay by Jane
Addams, “If Men Were Seeking the Franchise.” You are to read the
piece and then write a 5 paragraph essay responding to this question:
What are, according to Addams, the various (3) replies women might
give to men who are seeking the franchise? This response should be
typed and double-spaced and is due on Thursday, May 1.
Everyone should have picked a deviant, but if you have not, please
have one by Monday, as you need time to research and make your
creative piece. The Deviant Project is due on Tuesday, May 6.
