Welcome Back! I hope you have a very successful and fulfilling year.
9/9/15 – The Three Things Essay – due tomorrow, typed and double-spaced.
For students new to me:
“The Three Things I Like Best About Myself”
For students who have had me before:
“The Three Things I Would Like to Do In My Life”
This essay should contain an Intro, 3 Body Paragraphs, and a Conclusion.
9/10/15 – We collected the above essay today.
In class, we filled in the attendance/information charts.
Tonight, please read the Course Description sheet and the Quarterly
Current Event Assignment sheet you were given on Wed. You are responsible
for knowing the information on those sheets.
Tomorrow, we will distribute books and discuss how to attack Ch. 1.
9/11/15 – We distributed your text today. The number and condition were
recorded. Please bring it back on Tuesday, 9/15, for a cover check.
We discussed the history of the terrible events that unfolded on this day
fourteen years ago.

9/15/15 – Today, we checked book covers.
We took the Initial Assessment for Sociology.
We discussed how you will attack Chapter 1 in the text for your notes.
We will begin Ch. 1 tomorrow, discussing important terms you noted.
9/16/15 – We discussed sociological terms and concepts today. You were to have
pulled as many as you could from Chapter 1 (Macionis) and defined them in
your notes, so that you would be ready for discussion today.
The suggested organization of Ch. 1 is:
1. Terms and Concepts
2. Sociologist
3. The Three Approaches
4. The Sociology of Sports
We will be moving on to Sociologists tomorrow, so finish terms and
start identifying as many sociologists as you can in Ch. 1.
*** Remember to bring your text with you to class on Friday, 9/18.
9/17/15 – We finished our discussion of the important terms in Ch. 1
We continued on with sociologists, and we will finish them on Monday.
You were assigned two questions at the end of the article, “ The
Perspective of Sociology.” You are to type and double-space the
answers for Monday, 9/21.
We also assigned Current Event presenters for next Friday, 9/25.
These presenters will pick articles relating to sociological topics.
These must be approved by Tuesday, 9/22 (no school Wed.).
***Remember to bring your text with you to class tomorrow.
9/18/15 – Using your text, you completed (or got well on the way to
completing) your notes for Chapter 1.
Current Event presenters – don’t forget to have your articles approved
by Tuesday, 9/22.
Your answers to the article, “The Perspective of Sociology,” must be
turned in on Monday, typed and double-spaced.

Your notes on Ch. 1 should, by now, be finished. We are scheduling
our test on Ch. 1 for Tuesday, 9/29.
“The Perspective of Sociology” questions are due today.
Current Event volunteers who are going this Friday need to have
their articles approved by tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/22.
9/22/15 –
Current Event articles were to be approved by today.
We continued the Sociologists. I also talked about the paper that will be
due on Monday, 9/28, called “The Three Approaches.” This paper
should be typed and double-spaced. Grammar and spelling should be
correct, so proofread carefully. You will discuss each of the three
sociological approaches in detail. In your conclusion, you will pinpoint
the one to which you relate most closely and give reasons why.
All notes should be finished and we will be having our first test (Ch. 1)
on Tuesday, 9/29.
9/23/15 – No School – Yom Kippur
9/24/15 – Discussion on the Three Approaches today.
Remember that your paper on the Three Approaches is due on Monday,
9/28.
Current Events presentations will be tomorrow.
9/25/15 – Today, we had Current Event presentations. Nice job by all!
Monday, your Three Approaches paper is due.
Our test on Chapter 1 will be on Tuesday, 9/29.

9/28/15 – The Three Approaches paper is due today.
We finish Chapter 1 and reviewed it today, in preparation for the test
tomorrow.
Current Event volunteers – article due by Wed., 9/30, for approval.
9/29/15 – Test today on Chapter 1.
Current Event articles are due tomorrow for approval.
We will be moving on to Chapter 2 next, so you may begin doing your
notes. The notes for this chapter should NOT be done in the same way you
did the notes for Ch. 1. Take notes from the beginning to the end of the chapter.
We will begin discussions on Ch. 2 on Tuesday, October 6, so be ready. 
9/30/15 – Current Event articles were due today for approval.
You should begin your notes on Ch. 2. We will begin discussing the chapter
on Tuesday, 10/6. Do NOT do your notes in the same way that you did Ch. 1.
Do your notes from the beginning of the chapter to the end.
We began a film, Waking Ned Divine, that is a part of our curriculum.
You received a list of characters, and a Filmsheet with questions. This will need
to be completed and handed in within twenty-four hours after we have finished
viewing the film. You may write directly on the sheet.
10/1/15 – We continued watching the film, Waking Ned Divine.
Tomorrow, we will have Current Event presentations. We will probably
finish the film on Monday.
10/2/15 – Current Event presentations were delivered today.
We picked next week’s volunteers and their articles are due for approval
by Wed., Oct. 7.
We will be finishing the film by Monday and your filmsheets will be due by
Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Your notes on Chapter 2 should be completed by Tuesday when we begin
discussion on Scientific Sociological Investigation.
10/5/15 – Today, we finished the film. Your filmsheets will be due tomorrow.
Tuesday, we will begin Chapter 2. Your notes on this chapter should, by
now, be completed.
Current Event volunteers – your articles need to be approved by Wed., Oct. 7.

We began discussion on Chapter 2 – Sociological Investigation.

10/8/15 – We continued to discuss the orientations of Sociological investigation.
Tomorrow, we have Current Events.
10/9/15 – Current Events today. (No Current Events next week due to early
dismissal on Monday and PSATs on Wednesday.)
On Monday, we will be discussing more about the orientations from
which we approach research.
10/12/15 – No Current Events this week.
We continued discussion on the three research orientations of Sociology.
Notes on Ch. 2 should be complete.
10/13/15 – No Current Events this week.
We moved into the Interpretive and Critical orientations of sociological
research. Notes on Ch. 2 must be complete at this point.
10/14/15 – We finished the three orientations today.
No Current Events this week.
10/15/15 - Today, we got into the ways we actually DO sociological investigation.
Tomorrow, please be in class as we are doing an activity.
10/16/15 – We participated in a group activity today that illustrated how groups
work, or don’t work, together.
For Monday, please read the Stanford County Prison Experiment Slide
Show and choose 1 (one) question from the list of discussion questions at the end
to answer, typed & double-spaced.

10/19/15 – We discussed Friday’s activity, and the Stanford County Prison Exp.,
with which you familiarized yourselves over the weekend. Your discussion
question was due today.
10/20/15 – We discussed the Milgram Experiment today. We also talked about
the Survey Project. We will soon decide on a deadline for the project.
We are continuing with material from the text.
Current Event deadline for approval of articles is tomorrow!
10/21/15 – Current Event deadline was today for all those going on Friday.
We discussed possible topics for the project, and we continued to examine
methods by which we do sociological research.
10/22/15 – We will have Current Event events tomorrow.
We discussed the project instructions and the deadline. You should begin
to make your survey (8-10 questions) so that you can get it to me for editing. The
sooner you get your survey out the better.
10/23/15 – We had the last of our Current Events today for the lst quarter.
We will begin the cycle again in the 2nd quarter.
Yesterday, we established a deadline for the Survey Project. It is Wednesday,
Nov. 4. Please see me as soon as you can with your (typed) survey questions.
Also, keep in mind that you may come to me anytime with questions you may
have, in general, about the project.
We also set a test date for Chapter 2. It is Thursday, Oct. 29.

10/26/15 – Our test for Chapter 2 is Thursday, Oct. 29. Our review will be on
Wed., so please be here for that.
The Survey Project due date is Wed., Nov. 4.
No Current Events this week.
10/27/15 – Since we finished Ch. 2 yesterday, and our test is Thursday, 10/29,
we were able to use today to talk about your Survey Project. This was a
bonus day, and I hope it helped you all to wrap your head around what
you are doing.
Tomorrow, we will review for the test, so please make every effort
to be here.

results of the data we have gathered for our Survey Projects.

11/2/15 – We met again today in the Library Computer Lab to sample the Implicit
Association Test (Harvard) and work on graphing for the Survey Project.

11/9/15 – Today, we began a new chapter – on deviance. Please begin to
write up your notes on Chapter 9.
Survey Projects were returned today. They were weighted 4 times the
normal homework grade.
There will be one more major project this semester, and it will be
associated with this chapter on deviance.
11/10/15 – Prepare your notes on Chapter 9 so that you will be ready for
class discussions.
No Current Events this week.
11/11/15 – We discussed the biological/physical and psychological reasons for
criminality. Your notes need to be progressing.
No Current Events this week.
11/12/15 – The Roma Assignment was given to you today. Read the questions
and the articles attached. Type and double-space your answers for
Monday, Nov. 16.
We continued our discussion on the psychological reasons for crime.
11/13/15 – Your Roma assignment is due on Monday, Nov. 16.
We scheduled Current Events for Friday, Nov. 20. Articles need to be
approved by Wed., Nov. 18.
11/16/15 – We collected the Roma assignment today.
We went to the computer lab to take Implicit Association Tests.
Current Event volunteers, get your articles approved by Wed., Nov. 18.
11/17/15 – Our discussion returned to deviance today. We saw that each
sociological approach views deviance differently.
Current Event volunteers – tomorrow is the deadline for article approval.
11/18/15 – Merton’s Strain Theory was the subject of much of our discussion
today. We actually finished the Structural Functional view of deviance.
Tomorrow, we will delve into the Symbolic Interaction view.
Please have all notes for Chapter 9 completed.
Current Events articles were due today.
11/19/15 – We talked about the Deviant Project today, and figured out our
deadline. (I typed this prior to class, so deadline will be put on the board
and will appear tomorrow on this website.) I am always available to talk
with you about ideas for your deviant project. Talking it through with
someone will really help.
The sign-up sheet for the Deviant Project will go up Monday morning
on the fake wood panel next to my door. First come, first served. Bring a
pen (not a pencil) to sign up. Take the weekend to do preliminary research
on your deviant. If you find that there is really not enough on your person
you may change your deviant. But that needs to happen fast so that you do
not run out of time.
Current Events tomorrow.
Make sure all your notes are finished for Chapter 9.
11/20/15 – We had Current Events today, and with the remaining time, we
went over any questions there might have been on the Deviant Project.
Monday is the sign-up for a deviant and it’s first come, first served.
Try to do a little research on your deviant over this weekend.
We arrived at the due date of Tuesday, Dec. 8, for the Deviant Project.

11/23/15 – Sign up for the Deviant Project began today. One should sign up as
soon as possible because the sooner you zone in on a deviant, the sooner
you will be able to lock in on what you will do creatively. Please see me
with any difficulties. I will be happy to help you think of someone or of
what you might do. Project due date: Tuesday, Dec. 8.
11/24/15 – Our discussion today centered on stigmas, retrospective and prospective labeling, and mental illness.
At any time, if you have questions about the Deviant Project, please do
not hesitate to come and see me. Due date for project: Tuesday, Dec. 8.
11/25/15 – We discussed projects and brainstormed ideas with groups.

portion of the chapter today (up to p. 207).

Our next area of study is the Crime portion of Ch. 9, beginning on p. 207.
You should be writing up your notes on that part very soon. It doesn’t
take very long for us to treat this section.

12/7/15 – Today, we went over the procedure for the intake of Deviant Projects,
due tomorrow. Any questions were answered.
Any and all parts of your projects must be brought in tomorrow.
Inventory will be taken. Nothing additional may become a part of your
project after tomorrow.
The next section of Chapter 9 that we will cover will start with p. 207,
CRIME. You need to begin to take notes on that section. We won’t be on it
for long, so get it done quickly!
Current Event volunteers – your articles are due on Wed., !2/9.
12/8/15 – Deviant Projects were due today. We took inventory, and heard a
project or two.
Current Event articles are due tomorrow for approval.
We will begin CRIME in the Deviant chapter Thursday. Please have a least

12/10/15 – Today, we began the Crime portion (p. 207) of Chapter 9. You should
have all your notes completed on this, as we do not spend much time on
this. I will be announcing a test date for Crime soon.

do a reaction paper (5 paragraphs). This will be due on Monday, Jan. 18,
typed and double-spaced.
1/14/16 – Please Note!! Above, I said I gave you an article, but, alas, I forgot
to do that, AND, I forgot that Monday, Jan. 18, we do not have school!
Therefore, you will receive the article today and your reaction paper is
due on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

1/20/16 – We had our last test today – Ch. 13.
Tomorrow, we will have a group activity.
Please bring any magazines you have with pictures of people in them.
1/21/16 – We did our “Beauty Myth” group project today in class.
Tomorrow, we will begin Exam Review. You will be given an exam review
guide at that time.
The Sociology Exam is scheduled for Mods 9-10 on Friday, Jan. 29, second session.
1/22/16 – We began our exam review today, and we will continue on Monday.
See above for the day and session of the exam.
Senior exemptions will be given in class on Monday. If you think you might
be exempt, bring your text with you.
