Speech Writing Tips!
1. Write like you talk. Make the speech easy for the audience to listen and for you to give! (Use short
sentences, say words you use daily, and smile . )
2. Do the research! Use facts and examples to support your speech.
3. Write the speech like you would write a paper. There needs to be a beginning, middle and end.
4. Practice, practice, practice!
5. Have fun!
A. INTRODUCTION
Brainstorm how you are going to capture your audience’s attention. Write your attention grabber here:
Our lives drastically changed on September 11, 2001. Our feeling of being safe was shaken to its core. We now
continue the fight without sacrificing the 4th Amendment.
B. MAKE YOUR POINT
An effective speaker shares his/her main point early in the speech. This follows the introduction.
What main idea(s) do you want to share with your audience?
Security changing since 2001, need to create laws and/or policies to keep us safe with infringing on our right to
privacy
What is your stance? This is your action plan. (How you think the topic should be addressed - How your
problem should be fixed.)
We need to insure our safety without intruding on our right to privacy.
What is your theme? This is the moral of the story (speech). It can be a word or short phrase that summarizes
the topic and the stance. It is what you want people to remember. It can be repeated in either the same word or
phrase or in different forms.
need to be safe with privacy intact
- paraphrase the quote and use it at the end to sum up

C. OPPONENT’S VIEW
What is the viewpoint of one of your opponents on the same issue?
Some people such as those in the Libertarian Party believe that we should let the Patriot Act expire and go back
to the way things were before 9/11.
TRANSITION
*You may have one OR two transitions depending on where you choose to put your opponent’s
view.
Use a transition word or phrase to move from their point of view into your supports for your main idea
(theme) of your speech. (However; As you will see; This may be so, but; He/she may have a point, but)
However, I disagree. The Patriot Act is what allowed us to find and break apart terrorists cells. How can that be
an act that is allowed to expire? The world is not the same as it was before September 11.
Second transition (if applicable)
The Patriot Act allows us to be safer. While we have this legislation in place, we need to make sure that our
right to privacy is not sacrificed for our safety.
D. SUPPORT YOUR POINT OF VIEW/THEME
Fact/Summary
The Patriot Act is instrumental in breaking up
terrorist cells.
Explanation (transfer from Resource Summary)
It is a piece of legislation that protects our safety by
allowing law enforcement and intelligence agencies
to work together more easily.
E. SUPPORT YOUR POINT OF VIEW/THEME
Fact/Summary
We need to keep aerial surveillance from violating
privacy in homes.
Explanation (transfer from Resource Summary)
The people of the United States want to know that the
government is looking out for us without it spying on
us.

F. SUPPORT YOUR POINT OF VIEW/THEME
Fact/Summary
In addition to privacy in our homes, U.S. citizens
need to have personal privacy at airports. The TSA
invades personal privacy too much through the act of
frisking at airport check points. There needs to be
fewer people being frisked while trying to get from
point A to point B.
Explanation (transfer from Resource Summary)
Safety is not above the right to your personal privacy
and being able to travel with your personal dignity
intact.
G. LEAVE THEM SPEECHLESS!
End your speech with a strong concluding statement. This will be the very last and most important thing the
audience hears.
Possibilities:
 4 Point Close
 Call to Action
 Emotional Appeal—linked to theme
Concluding statement:
I will stand with you in the fight against terrorism. I will stand beside you in that fight ensuring your privacy
will not be the sacrifice of keeping America safe. “For if we trade liberty for security, we shall have neither.”
