Compare and Contrast Gulliver's Travel and the Butter Battle
The obviousness of how amazing writers can blend between real life events
and simple child stories. On the first hand, the Butter Battle book, written by the
famous Dr.Seuss, about 2 groups of people fighting for a simple reason. Leading this
battle into a cold war and use of mass destruction weapons. This book is a child book
showing the children in a nice way what going on in the world. On the second hand,
the Gulliver's Travels book, written by the outstanding writer Jonathan Swift, it is
about a man which travels into the ocean and a storm leads him to a weird and
mysterious island. This book is a travel book showing the English politics how
corrupt they are. Comparing the two books, gives a chance to see the extraordinary
events in the real world.
The two books have lots of similarities, and their similarities have a bond to
the real life events. For the food similarities, the egg in the Gulliver's Travel is in one
island is boiled and cut and the other island its boiled and cut over the other side. The
same thing in the Butter Battle book the butter is either put on the bread or flipped on
the other side. The customs are also the same, the Gulliver's travel book has throwing
rocks on rebellious cities, and in the Butter Battle book it became a custom that the
two cities fight over each other. The animosity of the Gulliver's Travel is that two
parties start fighting in court and they don’t eat nor drink, the same thing is happening
in the Butter Battle book, strong hostility is happening between the two groups and
fighting non-stop. The satire both happens in the stories, Swift try to show the world

the thoughts of the English politics and monarchy. Dr.Seuss also wanted to show the
world in a satirical way how they are going through a conflict without reason or
purpose. They are both written in first person perspective, although they don’t need to
make it in this perspective. The technology exists, throwing rocks with birds which
means airplane with missiles, and using huge things to throw on Gulliver.
The Butter battle book was written in 1960s, and it is not a coincidence that it
is in the same era of the cold war. The Cold war is between the US and Russia, this
war made a huge mark on the world and on each country. This affected also the
nearby countries which madding everything toward it popular. The counter culture in
the 1960s was a rebellion happened to stop the things done by the society. The activist
group try to make an end to the war, and here comes the Berlin wall, which was the
thing that stopped them from fighting and mixing with each other. The Berlin wall
stopped east Germany from mixing with west Germany. The Butter battle has huge
resemblance with the cold war and even the characters are what they are in the war.
The characters in the story are two kinds, the first group of characters are the Zooks
and they are a part of the war that happens in the Butter Battle book and in the cold
war they are the Russians. They choose to put the butter on the bread with butter sidedown. The slingshots symbolizes the nuclear weapons Russia had. The other type of
characters in the story are the Yooks, they are the second part of the war, in the cold
war they resemble to the US. The firing cannons also symbolizes the nuclear weapons
the US had. They choose their butter opposite to the Zooks and they choose it butter
side-up. The butter is their only hope, as if the butter is a silly reason that made them
fight. The butter is their religion, life and everything they do. Their beliefs are all
about the butter and that the butter is sacred thing to them. In the politics during the
cold war, people lived for a year or more on communism which everybody was
Mubarak ALMuftah
treated the same and the community had the money for the public. The democracy
started after cold war and it help people and they become united in choosing their
leader.
The Gulliver's Travel book was written in the 1700s, and at that time
revolutions started and wars erupted. This book is an incitement for the people at that
time. The characters were one kind the lili putains , they symbolize Britain, since at
that time they were loyal to the crown like the whigs. The other type of characters
were the Blefuscain and they resemble to France, at that time they were rebellious and
they were against the crown like the Tories. The eggs are what they feel is sacred and
it is their religion. It shows that the egg symbolizes Christianity and one part of the
egg cutters are Prostants and the other are Catholics. Their government is at the
beginning is a monarchy with a cruel leader and that lead into revolutions, and the
revolutions made it to democracy.
Real life events that made a mark on the world for years are the most
important, they are the things that people use. They use these information to develop
their learning. The compare and contrast of both stories shows huge resemblance in
the events. The similarities are the things similar in the war and revolution. The Butter
Battle and the Gulliver's Travel books are full of symbols. In this compare and
contrast essay the similarities and characters were shown and the events of the story
and real life were resembled.
