Character Interview
Name _____________________
Interview a Character from the book.
Pick a character that played an important role in the plot, and that you can easily find places where their thoughts and feelings about
what is happening is clearly evident. Write it in an interview format or on index cards—either way, be sure to label them as interviewer
or character.
Book Requirements:
Books must get final approval by Mrs. Minnich before you begin reading. You may choose the book that you read, as long as it
meets the following requirements:
 The book must have a minimum of 100 pages of reading.
 The book must be an appropriate reading level.
 The book may not be one read in a previous class.
 You may not use books that are collections of stories or statistics.
 Books must be appropriate and acceptable reading material
 No graphic novels
 Books cannot have a lot of pictures
2. Story Plot Map: You will need to submit a story plot map that includes all of these literary elements: exposition, conflict, rising action
events, climax, falling action events, resolution, and theme if there is one.
3. Checkpoints: The progress on your reading and project will be done 6 times throughout the marking period. Once you have chosen
your book, we will determine how many pages you need to read for 4 checkpoints: beginning, half-way point, and when you should be
finished with the book. The plot map will need to be completed to that point for each check point. The 5th & 6th checkpoints will be
within two week before your due date, and will check the progress of your project.

Character Interview
Name _____________________
Written Requirements:
4. Summary of book: Write a brief summary of the story onto note cards. You will use these during your presentation.
5. Interview questions: Write at least ten questions that will give the character the opportunity to discuss his/her thoughts and
feelings about his/her role in the story. Write these as you read. Periodic checks on your progress will be made.

Questions must be based on the entire book—beginning, middle, end—not just one section of it.

Be sure your questions are important to the character and to the plot of the story. These questions and answers must be
directly linked to the events in the story and help the audience (your teacher and classmates) to better understand that
character’s actions or motives.

They are not to be on unimportant details like “What was your friend’s name” or pet’s name. Instead, ask important questions
such as “Why didn’t you tell your mom how you really felt instead of running away?” The answers also need to provide
deeper reasons other than, “Because I didn’t want to.” Instead, it could be “I knew my new stepfather was going to rob us and
my mom would never believe me if I told her that.” And then explain why—based on the details of the story.

Write your questions as you read. Periodic checks will be made on this too.
4. Character’s answers: Then write the character’s answers to those questions. Be sure the answers are true to that character’s
personality, and reflect that character’s thoughts and feeling on that particular incident or event in the story. Write these as you
read. Periodic checks on your progress will be made.
5. Chapter number or page number: Clearly write either the chapter number or page number(s) that you pulled the question from
next to the question and answer.
6. Mechanics will be grades: spelling, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation.

Presentation
However you choose to present your interview is up to you. However, keep in mind you will be graded on your creativity.

Creativity: Here are some ideas (but you might have one that is even better): ask a classmate to be the interviewer and
you be the character, then act it out as a reporter, newscaster, or talk show; Video tape the interview and show it that way
instead; create a power point presentation, make puppets and act out the interview; draw the character and interviewer;
create a comic strip, make a life size interviewer and character and then read the questions and answers in different
voices, etc.

Voice: make sure you, and whoever you might have helping you, speak loud enough for everyone to hear.

Eye contact: look up at the audience; do not have your head down and read during the entire presentation

Length: Your entire presentation should last a minimum of 4 minutes to a maximum of 8 minutes. If you feel you need
longer then you must get the approval of Mrs. Minnich first.

Organization: You should be well organized BEFORE your presentation. Make sure all papers, materials, props, etc. are
ready and are placed in the order that you will need them during the presentation. Points will be deducted if you need to
run to your locker or you are missing them.
Early Bird Bonus Point
Present your book report at least one week before your scheduled due date and you will earn 10 extra points. You must get
Mrs.Minnich’s approval on the earlier date first.
Late Book Reports
FIVE POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR EVERY school DAY YOUR BOOK REPORT IS LATE. (EX: 2 DAYS LATE=10 POINTS
DEDUCTED.)
