DC Power Supply
Axle, Armature and Commutator

The axle contains the armature and
commutator

The armature consists of a set of
electromagnets

An electromagnet is a set of thin metal
plates stacked together.

Thin copper wire is coiled around each of
the plates

Each end of the wire is soldered onto the
plate and then wired to the commutator.

The commutator is a pair of plates
attached to the axle.

These plates provide the two connections
for the coil of the electromagnet.

Consists of the motor
housing and two curved
permanent magnets
How Does An Electric Motor
Work
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/motor4.htm

A battery is used to magnetize the
coils.

Creates a magnetic field traveling
north to south outside the coil

North end of the coil is attracted
the south end of the magnet

Vice-versa for the south end of the
coil

This attraction causes the axel to
make half a rotation

In an electric motor the
armature takes the place of the
nail

As the armature passes
through the horizontal position,
the current flips.

The magnetic dipole is flipped,
which is caused by a reverse
in electron flow

The commutator causes the
reverse of electron flow

The process continues
indefinitely

Function Within The
Reciprocating Saw

The electric motor converts the power of the
battery into mechanical energy

The motor does work to create rotational
motion

The rotational motion is transferred into linear
motion to be used for the tool’s primary
purpose.
Conclusion

The information presented in this presentation is a brief outline of
the main ideas regarding the main role of the electric motor in the
