Honors Precalculus will provide opportunities for you to build upon prior learning and extend your knowledge of concepts from algebra to trigonometry to prepare you for your study of calculus. You come to this course with great ability and a strong mathematical foundation. I hope that you will find this course interesting, enjoyable, and a challenge (in a good way)!!
It is my expectation that you work hard, ask questions, and take responsibility for your learning. I also expect that you treat others with respect, are honest, and contribute to a positive learning environment.
You can expect that I come to class prepared, answer your questions, and foster an intellectual and comfortable learning environment.
TI-Nspire CX
Many assignments are given on handouts and are just as important as those in the text.
All of the handouts are on three-hole punched paper for easy placement in a loose-leaf notebook.
Paper, graph paper, pencils, etc. should be brought to each class period.
Access on-line solutions at http://www.calcchat.com
You will need to select Precalculus With LimitsAGA 5e
Homework
When homework is checked for completion, points are awarded as follows:
3 points - homework complete (all work is shown)
2 points - homework almost complete but not finished;
1 point - homework half complete (reasonable attempt)
0 points – minimal attempt/no homework
Progress Checks
Homework assignments and any class notes may be used on Progress Checks.
Projects
You can expect to do several projects each semester. These projects will be another way that you can learn about precalculus concepts and its uses. The projects should be mathematically correct, neat, on time, and demonstrate your creativity.
Tests/Quizzes
Count on a test at the end of each chapter. Tests and quizzes may be given at other times as well. I never give pop tests/quizzes and usually give you plenty of notice about an upcoming evaluation. There will be a semester exam at the end of each semester.
In the event of a 3 rd tardy during a quarter, a detention will be assigned.
In the event of an excused absence, it is expected the syllabus will be followed and the student will follow up with Mrs. Dobbert the morning upon their return.
In the event of an unexcused absence, you will forfeit any points received for that day
If you miss for a fieldtrip, it is your responsibility to make up any work that is missed. I recommend that you talk with me prior to the day of the fieldtrip for any handouts or notes.
Grades are determined by dividing the total number of points possible into the total number of points you have accumulated. Your semester grade will be computed this way:
A+ [99, )
A [92,99)
40% First quarter grade
40% Second quarter grade
20% Semester Exam
B+ [88,90)
B [82,88)
C+ [78,80)
C [72,78)
D+ [68,70)
D [62,68)
A- [90,92) B- [80,82) C- [70,72) D- [60,62)
F ( ,60)
I hope that you will enjoy and appreciate the mathematics that you encounter this year. I am looking forward to this year of learning with you. If you find that you need some extra help, I am available 1 st , 2 nd , 5 th and 8 th periods. Each morning you can find me in the Math Office before school at 7:30 A.M. I can arrange some other time to work with you if you just let me know. If you are experiencing any difficulty get some help right away! If you are absent try to do the assigned work and stay caught up with the rest of the class.
Here’s to a great year!!!!
