context
This unit will introduce you to essential practical and critical skills involved in fashion design practice. In
engaging you with fashion techniques and processes and with creative ideas it will introduce you to the key
tools of studio practice and will provide the basis for a mediation between the critical and the practical demands
of fashion design practice. For this project you will design a range of 6 outfits for the high-street store
TOPSHOP.
brief
This project will introduce you to designing for a target market, you will begin to consider and contextualise
commercial designing and research into trend forecasting, fashion week reports and developing designs that
are appropriate for the TOPSHOP brand. You will also learn to progress your own designer level design ideas to
develop a suitable clothing range for the high-street. This project will help you develop work for your
professional portfolio and will allow you to work under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines. You will begin to
compile a shop report for TOPSHOP; the shop report will include all the elements that will help you design the
perfect range, including customer and competitor research. For the project you will design 6 outfits for the
brand. You will take inspiration from trend research (WGSN) and catwalk collection reports (Spring Summer
2016, London, Paris, Milan, New York) and balance this with your knowledge of the brand to create a
commercially viable capsule collection, perfect for the TOPSHOP customer. The capsule collection should
include at least 1 jacket, 1 coat, 1 pair of trousers, 1 top/blouse/shirt, 1 dress and 1 skirt. The high-street can
often work up to 6 months in advance so you will be designing a collection for Spring/Summer 2016.
As part of this project you will also begin to learn Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to support design aspects of
the project.
