March 18: Communicating About the CCSS
April 22: NCSC Curriculum Resource Guide Overview
May 13: NCSC English/Language Arts Resources
June 10: NCSC Mathematics Resources
SD CoP Webinar: March 18, 2014
South Dakota Department of Education and Keystone, LLC
We will have a
conversation about…
• What are the changes for ELA and Math instruction based upon the
CCSS
• What does it mean for students with disabilities to work directly
towards standards vs using extended standards
• How we communicate that difference to others (including parents,
other teachers, and administrators)
• What questions parents have about the connection of the CCSS to
their son’s/daughter’s education
• What resources are available to help parents make the transition
• Housekeeping
• Possibility of establishing a CoP resource site
• June webinar date and time

Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) are important for all
students http://www.corestandards.org
• The standards are (1) research and evidence based, (2)
aligned with college and work expectations, (3) rigorous,
and (4) internationally benchmarked
• A particular standard was included in the document only
when the best available evidence indicated that its
mastery was essential for college and career readiness in
a twenty-first-century, globally competitive society

• There are fewer standards
• The standards have clarity and specificity
• The standards stress conceptual understanding of key
ideas
• The sequence of topics and performances began with
research-based learning progressions

CCSS English Language
Arts (ELA) http://www.corestandards.org
• Focus on ends vs. means
• Integrated model for literacy (reading, writing, speaking,
listening, and language)
• Balance between literary and informational text
• Blended media and research
• Shared responsibility
• Purpose:
• Proficiency in reading complex informational text independently
in a variety of content areas (including history/social studies,
science, and technical subjects).

CORE CONTENT
CONNECTORS
(CCCs)
Core Content Connectors (CCCs)
• Identify the most salient grade-level, core academic
content in ELA and mathematics for students with a
significant cognitive disability.
• The CCCs provide access to the standards.
• The CCCs are NOT extensions to the CCSS.
• The CCCs are NOT standards.
Core Content Connectors Extended Standards
• Every standard is addressed
• Each is a part of the linked
CCSS and all of the standard is
addressed (through “families”
which are bundles of CCCs)
• Achievement of related CCCs
addressing all parts of the
standard (“families”) leads to
conceptual understanding of the
standard
• The standard is the ultimate
goal
• Usually only prioritized
standards are addressed
• Linked to the standards but may
not necessarily address the entire
standard (ESs not typically
bundled into related groups that
address everything in the
standard)
• Achievement of ES does not
lead to conceptual understanding
of the entire standard
• Are in place of the general
education standard
CCCs compared to ES

Core Content Connectors
• 6.EE.9: Use variables to represent two
quantities in a real-world problem that
change in relationship to one another;
write an equation to express one quantity,
thought of as the dependent variable, in
terms of the other quantity, thought of as
the independent variable. Analyze the
relationship between the dependent and
independent variables using graphs and
tables, and relate these to the equation.
• 6.PRF.2a3 Use variables to represent two
quantities in a real-world problem that
change in relationship to one another.
• 6.PRF.2a2 Use variable to represent numbers
and write expressions when solving real
world problems
• 6.PRF.2a4 Analyze the relationships between
the dependent and independent variables
using graphs and tables, and relate to the
equation

Extended Standards
• 6.A.4.1. Students are able to use
concrete materials, graphs, and
algebraic statements to represent
problem situations.
• Extended Content: 6.A.A.4.1.
Students will use concrete
materials and graphs to represent
problem situations.

What’s your best thinking
about...
• What parents will want to know?
• Questions generated by CoP during the webinar
• Why are these connected to the CCSS?
• With the change in curriculum, will students lose instruction on
functional/life skills?
• What will change using the computer?
• How will using the CCSS allow for individualization?
• What will the test look like?
• What will my child be expected to do?
• Are the CCSS really for all students?
• How will accommodations be made in the online assessment for
students who are non-verbal and have complex instructional needs?
