UMBC – HCPSS Superintendent Award
UMBC will give a merit scholarship recognizing an academically talented student from each of the HCPSS high
schools that has been admitted to UMBC. The four-year awards will range between $12,000 - $18,000 per year
based on the student’s academic credentials.
Award Eligibility
Competitive candidates will present a:
Minimum cumulative weighted grade point average of 3.5.
Minimum SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1450, with a writing score of at least 600 OR a
minimum ACT composite score of 33.
Strength of curriculum and academic performance will be considered.
Students must currently attend a HCPSS high school.
For best consideration, students should submit a completed Application of Undergraduate Admission by the
posted Early Action deadline of November 1st.
Awards will be made no later than February for the incoming fall class.
Award recipients must maintain continuous full-time enrollment at UMBC, earn at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA
each semester, and have no more than one semester below a 3.0 semester GPA average.
Soroptimist International of the Americas is sponsoring The Violet Richardson Award Honoring Young
Women for Volunteer Action. If you are a woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your
community or school and believes in the power of volunteer action, then you may be eligible to win. Completed
applications, essay, and any supporting materials must be received by December 1, 2014. Applications:

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation Award Are you a young entrepreneur? Graduating high school
seniors who operates their own small business? The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards are non-renewable
scholarships created to recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.
The scholarships are valued between $1,000 and $15,000. Application deadline is December 18. Visit

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program
The Stokes Educational Scholarship Program is a tremendous opportunity to gain valuable experience in your
field while attending college and earning a degree. The Stokes Program is open to high school seniors,
particularly minority students, planning to major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering. With
the Stokes Program, you will attend college full-time, then work during the summer at NSA’s main
headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, for a minimum of 12 weeks in areas that are related to your course of
study. You’ll acquire real-world experience and receive a salary year-round. Best yet, after you graduate
college, you won’t have to go through the job search hassle – a position will be waiting for you in your area of
study in the exciting world of NSA.
Qualifications:
You must be a U.S. Citizen
You must be eligible to be granted a security clearance.
You must be a high school senior at the time of application.
You must achieve a minimum SAT/College Board score of 1600 (1100 Critical Reading and Math, 500
Writing) or ACT 25
You must be planning to major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering.
A 3.0 GPA or above on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
You must submit your online application and hardcopy documents between September 1 and November 15.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations recognizes students who are helping improve race relations in their
schools or communities. Winners of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations are awarded up to $1,000 and invited
to Princeton University for an expense-paid weekend symposium on race. Apply online or by mail. For more

NCWIT Award for Aspiring in Computing
This award acknowledges the computing achievements and aspiration of young women, and generates visibility
for women’s participation in computing-related pursuits. Two award levels exist – Local Affiliate Awards and
National Awards. Applicants must complete the online application at www.ncwit.org/award
SunTrust Off to College Scholarships Sweepstakes Free to enter and eligibility not based on GPA or
financial need. A total of 30 individual $500 scholarships will be awarded for education expenses. Two
winners will be randomly chosen every two weeks from October 31 – May 15. Enter online at

Ron Brown Scholar Program The Ron Brown Scholar Program (RBSP) honors the legacy of Ronald H.
Brown through a selective scholarship program that advances higher education for community-minded and
intellectually gifted African Americans. RBSP competitively awards Ron Brown Scholars four-year $40,000
scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who
demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global
citizenship – the four pillars of the late Ronald H. Brown’s mission to uplift people of all races, cultures and
ethnicities – especially our disadvantaged youth.
Recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of
their choice within the United States. Ron Brown scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career
objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Since the Program’s inception in 1996, more
than 300 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars. Applications available at www.ronbrown.org

Captain John and Angie Skinner Scholarship – Awarded to high school seniors planning to enter a science
or engineering field of study supportive of national defense. The Scholarship is paid over the four year period
at the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000. Ten (10) Captain John and Angie Skinner Scholarships are
expected to be given in 2015.
Timothy J. Sheahan Scholarship For a high school senior from the Ft. Meade area planning to enter a science
or engineering field of study supportive of the military, defense, or intelligence community. The Scholarship is
paid over the four year period at the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000. One (1) Timothy J. Sheahan
Scholarship is expected to be given in 2015.
George R. Cotter Scholarship For a high school senior from the Ft. Meade area planning to enter a computer
engineering field of study supportive of the military, defense, or the intelligence community. The Scholarship
is paid over the four year period at the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000. One (1) George R. Coller
Scholarship is expected to be given in 2015.
Women in Technology Scholarship For a female high school senior planning to enter a science or engineering
field of study supportive of the military, defense, or intelligence community. The Scholarship is paid over the
four year period at the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.
DREAM Scholarship For a female high school senior planning to enter a science or engineering field of study
supportive of the military, defense, or intelligence community. The Scholarship is paid over the four year
period at the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.
Freedom Scholarship For graduating high school seniors who have overcome adversity or hardship in their
personal or family life to aid them in accomplishing their career goals. Students must plan to enter a science or
engineering field of study supportive of national defense. The Scholarship is paid over the four year period at
the rate of $2,500 per year for a total of $10,000.
BigSun Scholarship BigSun Organization helps young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. All student

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program is a nomination-based award, and only one
student per school may be nominated by their principal or school counselor. Leaders and Achievers, funded
through the Comcast Foundation, recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their
commitment to community service, academics and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these
accomplishments, Leaders and Achievers are awarded one-time scholarships, with a base award of $1,000.
Recipients may also be eligible for scholarships at higher levels, such as the Gustave G. Amsterdam Leadership
Award and the Comcast Founders Scholarship, awarded locally from the eligible pool of Leaders and Achievers
winners. Since the inception of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Program in 2000, more than $21.6 million
in scholarships has been awarded to approximately 21,000 students.
Scholarship requirements include:
 Full-time high school senior currently enrolled at a high school in a community served or approved by
Comcast.
 Student grade point average of 2.8 or higher.
 Student demonstrates leadership abilities in school activities or through work experiences.
 Student shows a strong commitment to and involvement in community service.
 Student plans to attend an accredited, non-profit college, university or vocational/technical school in the
United States.
 Student will need to complete and approve the terms and conditions set forth in the media release
included as part of the scholarship acceptance form. If the nominee is not over the age of 18, the
parent/guardian must complete and approve the terms and conditions set forth in the release.

The Howard County Arts Council 2014 Arts Scholarship Program provides funding to college-bound
Howard County seniors committed to pursuing a career in the arts. Last year, HCAC awarded $15,000 in
scholarship funds to students entering college in the 2013-2014 academic year. Scholarships must be used for
enrollment in an accredited college program for a degree in the arts. Applications for the 2015 Arts
Scholarship are available at hcac.culturegrants.org. Deadline to apply is January 15, 2015.
2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Award
This award celebrates the spirit of volunteerism and recognizes students who have distinguished themselves
through volunteer work. Students who have taken part in community service activities over the past year you
are encouraged to fill out an online application at http://spirit.prudential.com. Complete the application and the
student/parent agreement by November 4, 2014. Go to the “Certification” page to email or print out
instructions for your certifier. See Mrs. Hirsch in Student Services regarding certification by November 4,
2014. Only one Glenelg High student may be nominated.
