MY HEART’S IN THE HIGHLANDS
by Robert Burns
Before reading
Look at the title of the poem and say what the poem is about.
Pay attention to the following geographic names:
The Highlands – название горной местности на севере Шотландии.
A strath – (шотл.) долина, по которой протекает река.
My Heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My Heart’s in the Highlands a chasing a deer;
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My Heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North;
The birthplace of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;
Farewell to the forests and wild – handing woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud – pouring floods.
My Heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My Heart’s in the Highlands a chasing a deer;
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My Heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.

A JOYFUL SONG OF FIVE
written by Katherine Mansfield (1923)

Come, let us all sing very high
And all sing very loud
And keep on singing in the street
Until there's quite a crowd;
And "Here we gather Nuts and May,"
"I wrote a Letter" too,
"Here we go round the Mulberry Bush,"
"The Child who lost its shoe";
And keep on singing in the house
And up and down the stairs;
Then underneath the furniture
Let's all play Polar bears;
And every game we ever played.
And then--to stay alive-Let's end with lots of Birthday Cake
Because to-day you're five.
And crawl about with doormats on,
And growl and howl and squeak,
Then in the garden let us fly
And play at hid and seek;

Nuts in May, nuts in May,
Here we go gathering nuts in May,
On a cold and frosty morning.
Who will you have to fetch him/her away,
Fetch him/her away, fetch him/her away,
Who will you have to fetch him/her away,
On a cold and frosty morning.
Who will you have for nuts in May,
Nuts in May, nuts in May,
Who will you have for nuts in May,
On a cold and frosty morning.
We'll have [name] to fetch him/her away,
Fetch him/her away, fetch him/her away,
We'll have [name] to fetch him/her away,
On a cold and frosty morning.
We'll have [name] for nuts in May,

The simple game involves holding hands in a circle and moving around to the first verse, which
is alternated with the specific verse, where the players break up to imitate various appropriate
actions.
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush.
Here we go round the mulberry bush
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we comb our hair,
We comb our hair, we comb our hair.
This is the way we comb our hair
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we wash our face,
We wash our face, we wash our face.
This is the way we wash our face
On a cold and frosty morning.
This is the way we brush our teeth,
We brush our teeth, we brush our teeth.
This is the way we brush our teeth
On a cold and frosty morning.
“I Wrote a Letter to My Mother”
In this ring game all but one of the children are seated facing inwards, with one going round the
outside of the circle with a handkerchief in one hand. As the children sing, s/he drops the hankie
at random and carries on round the ring:
I wrote a letter to my mother, on the way I dropped it
And one of you has picked it up and put it in your pocket.
Not you, not you, not you, not you.........
and on round until s/he reaches the child who has the hankie behind her, with "....not you, but
YOU!!" and a tap on the shoulder. The chosen child then has to jump up and race the child
outside the ring, in opposite directions, back to the gap left in the circle - the loser is "it" for the
next round of the game.
3. What games do you play at your birthday party?
