“Interface Mediated Performance of Nanoscale Metallic Materials”

Abstract

Nanoscale metallic materials (NMM)s show dramatically improved properties compared to conventional metals, including elevated strength, superior catalytic functionality, resistance to radiation damage, superplasticity, and suppression of fatigue. The mechanisms that govern deformation in NMMs often occur over picosecond times and nanometer lengths. No available experimental methods have sufficient spatiotemporal resolution to investigate these mechanisms. In my research, I use computational techniques to understand the fundamental physics of the underlying deformation mechanisms of NMMs at these small time and length scales and investigate the effect of different parameters such as interface structure, chemical composition and morphology of the NMMs on defining their mechanical properties. Here I present a multiscale framework for deformation mechanisms of composite multilayers at various length scales and provide mathematical models to determine the collective behaviors of these materials. Further I discuss the controlling role of interfaces on shaping the varying behavior of NMMs with mixed configurations and introduce a reduced order mesoscale model to predict the dislocation structures of the interface. This model can be used as a basis for designing materials with tailored properties for various applications.

Bio

Dr. Abdolrahim is a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her PhD in mechanical engineering from Washington

State University in 2013. She also holds a M.S. in aerospace engineering from Tarbiat Modares University. Dr.

Abdolrahim’s research involves multiscale modeling of the performance of nanoscale metallic materials including multilayers, nanowires, nanoparticles and nanoporous materials. She is currently working on continuum modeling of interface structures and inferring the properties of interfaces related to their structures.

Dr. Abdolrahim is the recipient of the Best Junior Researcher Award and Henry DeWitt Smith Scholarship from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and

Petroleum Engineers for her work on nanoscale materials. She also received the outstanding graduate student,

Harriet B. Rigas, Award from Association for Faculty Women at Washington State university. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Physical Review B, International Journal of Plasticity,

Scientific Reports, Philosophical Magazine, and other widely recognized journals. She received The 2013

James Clerk Maxwell Young Writers Prize for her article “The mechanical response of core-shell structures for nanoporous metallic materials” featured in Philosophical Magazine.
